Utah Eagles join CBA

September 21, 2006 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) News Release

ALBANY, NY (September 21, 2006) - The Continental Basketball Association today welcomed its newest member, the Utah Eagles for the 2006-07 season. The Utah Eagles will be based out of Salt Lake City and will call the Salt Lake City Community College home.

Salt Lake City businessman Randy Mellor owns the Eagles. Mellor has sold and developed real estate for the past 13 years. He is also the founder of Unishippers, developing 480 franchises throughout the United States, with over 300 million in business yearly. Mellor is also the co-founder of Signature Alert, providing security systems to 37 cities across the United States.

"This is a great venture for us," stated Mellor. "The City of Salt Lake will be a great city for CBA basketball and when this opportunity arose to join I jumped at the opportunity to join. The CBA is a league with great history and to be able to join was an easy decision. We will be providing the best basketball to Salt Lake at an affordable price."

Manning the helm for the Eagles this season will be veteran coach Scott Fields. Fields is a dean of overseas coaching having coached in Lebanon, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Luxemburg, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. Fields' teams have won Asian Championships and have accumulated a near 800 winning percentage. Five former players that have played for Fields are currently in the NBA, including Carlos Arroyo, Steven Howard, and Jamie Watson.

"I am fortunate to have this opportunity to coach the Eagles," said Fields. "I am thankful to Randy for giving me this opportunity to be in the CBA. The Eagles will be a team that plays hard every night and will make the community proud. We will bring in the best players not in the NBA and give the fans a team that they can support and identify with."

"This is another great day for the CBA," said CBA Director of Operation Dennis Truax. "The combination of Randy Mellor and Scott Fields is a win win situation not only for the CBA but also for the City of Salt Lake. Randy has the business knowledge and connections to make this a premier franchise and Scott Fields has extensive coaching experience and will be bringing in the best players he can for the Eagles. The Eagles will be a force to reckon with the season."

The CBA recently completed its 60th anniversary season on March 27 with the Yakama Sun Kings defeating the Gary Steelheads in a best-of-three-game series. That series featured the CBA's 2006 Player of the Year, Anthony Goldwire (Sun Kings), and the CBA's 2006 Coach of the Year, Jaren Jackson (Steelheads).
