Published on July 19, 2005 under USL First Division (USL-1) News Release
TAMPA, FL - United Soccer Leagues announced Tuesday the Week 13 Teams of the Week, honoring Atlanta's Fabian Dawkins, Harrisburg's Chad Severs, Chicago's Corey Sipos and Cincinnati's Heather Hathorn as the Players of the Week. The U19 DC United Boys and U15 Nordic Spirit Girls were honored as the Super Y-League Clutch Team Performances of the Week.
Silverbacks midfielder Fabian Dawkins led Atlanta to a 4-2 win over the Puerto Rico Islanders this weekend, recording two goals and an assist. The brace lifts his team-leading total to nine goals and the assist was his first on the season.
With his squad down 1-0 in the 30th minute, Dawkins took a feed from Gary Brooks and beat âkeeper Dan Kennedy to tie the score. Then, with the Silverbacks clinging to a 3-2 lead, Dawkins salted the game away in stoppage time as his empty netter gave Atlanta a two-goal cushion.
Dawkins, a member of the Jamaican National Team, is second in the league in points with 19. This is his first season in the USL First Division as he spent the last five seasons with Village United FC of the Wray & Nephew National Premier League.
City Islanders forward Chad Severs recorded two goals and an assist on the weekend as Harrisburg defeated the Western Mass Pioneers and tied the New Hampshire Phantoms.
Against the Pioneers on Friday night, Severs opened the scoring in the fourth minute when he converted a Sumed Ibrahim pass to open the scoring. Just six minutes later, after Western Mass midfielder Omar McFarlane knotted the score at 1-1, Severs struck again off a rebounded shot from Adam Clay. The two teams would trade scores again but the City Islanders came out on top 4-2.
On Saturday night, Harrisburg took on New Hampshire, who led most of the game 1-0 after an 18th minute strike. In the 75th minute, Severs sent a cross to the back post which was deftly headed down by defender Ryan O'Neill. The score would stay 1-1 and the City Islanders earned four points from their weekend road trip.
Severs, a Penn State product, is in his rookie campaign with Harrisburg. He currently leads the team with eight goals and two assists for 18 points. Those 18 points are also good for a tie for fourth in the USL Second Division. In 2004, he competed with the USL PDL's Reading Rage, recording five goals and one assist for 11 points.
Chicago Fire Premier defender Corey Sipos had quite a week leading his side to three victories.
In addition to leading the league's second-best defensive unit in allowing just one goal in the three wins on the week, Sipos scored in each. He began the week with the club's third goal in a 3-1 win over Fort Wayne Tuesday. On Friday, he tallied the second goal of a 4-0 road win over West Michigan. He wrapped the week up with the game-winner in a 3-0 win over Kalamazoo Saturday.
Sipos now has three goals and an assist on the season through nine games. The Fire Premier have allowed just 10 goals through 14 games, second to Orange County, who has concluded its season having given up just eight.
Trying to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Cincinnati Ladyhawks handed the Midwest Division leading Detroit Jaguars just their second loss of the season Saturday with a 3-1 road win behind the play of Heather Hathorn.
Hathorn wasted no time, registering the opening goal three minutes into the match on an assist from Lindsay Holley. The lead held until Melissa Dobbyn leveled a minute before halftime. Seven minutes into the second frame Hathorn connected with Kim Comisar for the go-ahead goal before capping the night with the insurance goal in the 73rd minute.
The following night at London Hathorn tied the game in the final moments of the match at 1-1 only to see the Grypons capitalize on an earlier Ladyhawks red card to go on to a 5-1 overtime win, eliminating Cincinnati from the playoff picture.
Hathorn leads the team in goals with six in nine games and is second in points with 15, one behind Andrea Cunningham.
The U19 DC United Boys (10-2-1) grabbed a much-needed 1-0 road win over second-place Reston FC Thursday (10-1-0). Guil Costa scored in the first half for DC and goalkeeper Jean-Claude Mutumbo held on for the shutout. The two teams are vying for a shot to play in the U19 Super Y-League North American Finals in New Jersey.
The U15 Nordic Spirit Girls (5-4-0) defeated Seacoast United (8-3-0), who are tied for first in the New England Division. Shannon Hennessy put the visitors on the board with a goal in the second half and Jenna Wulfson recorded the clean sheet for the 1-0 win.
