USL announces week 11 honors

June 29, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1) News Release

TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced today the Teams of the Week for Week 11 of the season, honoring Puerto Rico's Michael Ueltschey, Wilmington's Kenny Bundy, Rhode Island's Zico Antunes and Fort Wayne's Amy Warner as the A-League, Pro Soccer League, Premier Development League and W-League Players of the Week. Ashley Stubblefield of the U17 Cal Cougars and Matteo Maneiro of the U19 Ottawa Fury were honored as the Super Y-League Players of the Week.

In a two-game set with Virginia Beach, the Puerto Rico Islanders earned a draw and their second win of the year to pull out of the Eastern Conference cellar. Goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey led the way with shutouts in both matches.

The two sides played to a scoreless stalemate Friday in Bayamon with Ueltschey making seven saves to shut out the Mariners offense, which had seen Dante Washington tally four goals and two assists over their previous two games.

Ueltschey, with help from his defense, proceeded to post his fourth shutout in seven games played this year on two saves in a 2-0 victory Sunday.

The third-year A-League goalkeeper has bounced around the league, but seems to have found a spot as the starter for the Islanders. He had just one shutout in 14 previous games, posting the lone clean sheet while playing behind the league's top defense in Montreal last season in one of two appearances. He was 4-6-0 with Cincinnati and 0-0-2 with Richmond in 2002.

The Wilmington Hammerheads turned around a recent two-game losing skid by winning all three of their matches last week. Midfielder Kenny Bundy recorded two goals and an assist over those three games including the game-winner in a 3-0 win over the Richmond Kickers Future Wednesday.

Bundy recorded his first points of the night in the game's 14th minute, off an assist from Warren Ukah. He then turned provider in the 62nd when Junior Zarate tucked home Bundy's pass for a 2-0 lead.

Two days later, the Hammerheads notched a 2-1 decision against the Williamsburg Legacy before heading to Northern Virginia to take on the Royals. With Northern Virginia up 1-0, Bundy volleyed a Zarate cross past goalkeeper David Noyes.

Bundy currently sits tied for seventh place in the league in points (12) on four goals and four assists. He joined the Hammerheads in 2004 after finishing the season with the Dallas Sidekicks of the MISL. He had previously played with the Carolina Dynamo, recording three goals and five assists in 19 games during the 2003 season.

Trailing 2-0 to the PSL's Western Mass Pioneers Wednesday night, Rhode Island Stingrays forward Zico Antunes caught fire and not only rallied his club to level the game, but to win it as well.

After giving up two goals in the first 19 minutes, Antunes pulled one back for the Stingrays in the 32nd minute with teammate Narcisco Fernandes providing the equalizer three minutes from the break.

In the second half, it was all Antunes as he set up Chris Napolitano in the 63rd minute for the game-winner and then put the game out of reach with strikes in the 79th and 90th minutes to complete the hat-trick.

Antunes leads the team in scoring with 11 goals and five assists in 10 games. It is the third straight year he has hit double-digits in goals, scoring 16 in 2003 and 12 in 2002. He now has 91 points in three seasons with the Stingrays on 39 goals and 13 assists.

The first-year Fort Wayne Fever Women improved their unbeaten mark to 5-0-0 with a victory over the division-leading Detroit Jaguars Wednesday. Forward Amy Warner contributed in all four goals in the 4-2 win.

Warner tallied the opening marker in the 15th minute only to see Detroit pull level on the first of two goals from Erica Demers five minutes later.

Tied at 1-1 and a player short due to injury, the Fever took a two-goal lead in a three-minute stretch courtesy of Warner, who found Mary Boland in the 38th minute and scored her second of the night and what proved to be the winner in the 40th.

Warner, who leads the team in scoring with seven goals and five assists, finished her hat-trick in the 72nd minute for a commanding 4-1 lead on an assist from Boland.

On the road and facing an unbeaten U17 DVSC squad, goalkeeper Ashley Stubblefield led her Cal Cougars to a 0-0 draw, posting six saves in the shutout. Matteo Maneiro of the U19 Ottawa Fury came off the bench to tally a goal and an assist in a 3-0 win over the Boston Bulldogs to remain the lone unbeaten in the division at 4-0-2.
