TAMPA, Fla. - The USL announced the league's 2015 statistical award winners on Friday, as Louisville City FC's Matt Fondy was named the league's Scoring Champion, and also claimed the Golden Boot, after a record-setting season. Rochester Rhinos goalkeeper Brandon Miller earned the Goals-Against Average Champion after he too set a new league record, while Fondy's teammate in Louisville, Bryan Burke, was named Assist Champion.
Matt Fondy, Louisville City FC - Scoring Champion & Golden Boot
One of the first signings in Louisville's history, Fondy set USL records of 22 goals and 51 points, breaking records set by Orlando City SC's Kevin Molino just a year ago in the process. Fondy scored two-fifths of the goals for the league's leading attack as Louisville led the league with 55 goals in the regular season on its way to the No. 2 seed in the USL's Eastern Conference Playoffs, and held off a remarkable challenge from OKC Energy FC's Danni König, who finished with 21 goals in his first season in the league.
Brandon Miller, Rochester Rhinos - Goals-Against Average Champion
The understudy to 2014 USL Goals-Against Average Champion John McCarthy, now with the Philadelphia Union in MLS, Miller stepped into the starting role for the Rhinos this season and set a pair of league records. Miller recorded 13 shutouts this season, which earned him a goals-against average of 0.54 as the Rhinos claimed the USL Regular Season Championship. Miller's save percentage of .807 also led the USL, as the Rhinos lost just once in 28 games during the regular season.
Bryan Burke, Louisville City FC - Assist Champion
Burke played provider for Fondy and others in an outstanding run of form in the second half of the season. The outside back recorded five assists in the final 10 weeks of the regular season to sweep up the leaderboard, while also providing solid defensive play at right back for the expansion side. Burke edged out Pittsburgh's Kevin Kerr and Colorado Springs' Luke Vercollone for the honor, with both midfielders ending the season with nine assists as they too helped their sides reach the 2015 USL Playoffs.
Fondy, Burke and Miller will all be in action in the 2015 USL Playoffs, as their sides join the action in the conference semifinals next weekend after earning a bye for their top-two finishes in the Eastern Conference. The 2015 USL Playoffs kick off on Friday night as Colorado Springs hosts Seattle Sounders FC 2 in the Western Conference.
Saturday brings a tripleheader as the New York Red Bulls II host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at 5 p.m. ET, followed by a clash between longtime rivals the Charleston Battery and Richmond Kickers at MUSC Health Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET. Action then moves to the west coast, as Sacramento Republic FC and the LA Galaxy II meet at Bonney Field at 10:30 p.m. ET in a rematch of last season's memorable semifinal.
