
USHL Alumni Report: 280 Former USHL Players Prep for 2023 NCAA Division I Men's Hockey Tournament

The NCAA Division I men's hockey tournament gets underway Thursday and 280 United States Hockey League alumni dot the rosters of the 16 teams vying for the 2023 national championship. There are a total of 447 players listed on the rosters of the teams in this year's postseason tournament
The United States Hockey League is again well represented in the upcoming NCAA D1 Men's Ice Hockey Tournament," said USHL President and Commissioner Bill Robertson. "Having 280 former USHL players compete in the NCAA Regional Tournament is another testament to the outstanding talent that is developed each year by our USHL Owners, GM's and coaches. It should be fun to watch our former players compete over the next several days as this an exciting time of year for hockey."
Harvard has the most representation from the USHL with 26 former league players skating into the postseason for the Crimson. Minnesota, Michigan, and Ohio State all have 23 former USHL players, while Penn State claims 22 USHL alumni. Western Michigan has 21, while Cornell and Boston University both have 19. Denver, St. Cloud State and Minnesota State come in with 17 each.
Head coaches emanating from the USHL include Minnesota's Bob Motzko (North Iowa General Manager/Head Coach, 1986-91 & Sioux Falls Manager/ Head Coach, 1998-01), Minnesota State's Mike Hastings (Omaha General Manager / Head Coach / Assistant Coach, 1992-93 & 1994-2008), Denver's David Carle (Green Bay Assistant Coach, 2012-14) and St. Cloud State's Brett Larson (Sioux City General Manager/Head Coach, 2011-13). Michigan's interim head coach Brandon Naurato played in the USHL with Cedar Rapids and Omaha (2003-05) and Western Michigan's Pat Ferschweiler played for the Rochester Mustangs (1998-99).
All 16 active USHL member clubs are represented by multiple players with USA Hockey NTDP (26) and the Tri-City Storm (23) leading the way. Green Bay, Youngstown and Muskegon all have 20 former players to round out the top five.
