
USA Basketball Men's WCG team has D-League flavor

GREENVILLE, S.C., August 22 - The NBA Development League will be well represented on the USA Basketball Men's World Championship Qualifying Team. Six of the 12 players and two assistant coaches have ties to the D-League.
Tang Hamilton and Ron Slay, from Fayetteville and Tulsa respectively, both competed in the D-League last season, while Lynn Greer, Kris Lang, Marque Perry and Alex Scales all competed in the league over the last three seasons.
Also representing the D-League are WQC Team assistant coaches Joey Meyer and Dennis Johnson. Meyer is currently the head coach of the Tulsa 66ers, while Johnson was named head coach of the Austin Toros on Friday after spending last season coaching the Florida Flame. Meyer has coached the last two D-League championship teams.
The USA squad will compete in the FIBA Americas Men's World Championship Qualifying Tournament which begins Wednesday and runs through September 4 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The top four finishing teams will earn their nation a qualifying berth in the 2006 FIBA World Championship.
The NBA Development League includes the Albuquerque Thunderbirds (N.M.), Arkansas RimRockers (Little Rock), Austin Toros (Texas), Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Florida Flame (Ft. Myers), Fort Worth Flyers (Texas), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.) and Tulsa 66ers (Okla.).
The D-League offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. Thirty-four (34) players have been called up to the NBA on 50 separate occasions. Ten (10) former D-League coaches, five athletic trainers, 11 referees and 29 front office executives have also been called up since the start of the league's inaugural season in November 2001.
Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the league also offers fun, family entertainment at affordable prices. The D-League is a source of on-court talent for the NBA's 30 teams and is a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
