United Football League Announces Open Player Tryouts

March 17, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1) News Release

JACKSONVILLE, FL ‚¬" Thursday, March 17, 2011 ‚¬" The path to earning a United Football League roster spot starts here. The defending champion Las Vegas Locos, the Omaha Nighthawks and the Sacramento Mountain Lions are laying down the challenge to athletes who believe they have what it takes to make an impact in professional football.

Tryouts will be held in each team ‚¬â„¢s home market and in additional cities across the United States. Players may pre-register online at www.ufl-football.com or in person. Each tryout camp will last approximately four hours and is for all positions, including kickers and punters. Athletes will be timed in the 40-yard dash and will participate in a series of individual and team drills. The cost to enter the tryouts is $60 payable online or in person.

‚¬Å“A lot of talented players will show up and the odds are high that we will take a handful to training camp with a shot at making our final roster, ‚¬Â said Locos head coach JIM FASSEL.

‚¬Å“Agents have told me that they feel their players get a really great tryout. They are given a genuine look and if they are good enough, they will have a shot at making the team. ‚¬Â

Coach Fassel and the two-time champion Locos will hold open player tryouts at a venue to be confirmed in Las Vegas on Saturday, April 9 and as they did in 2010, will cast the net to Cerritos College in Los Angeles, CA, on Saturday, May 7 and Chaparral High School in Phoenix, AZ, on Saturday, May 21.

For those who truly possess the qualities UFL head coaches are looking for in ‚¬Ëœwalk on ‚¬â„¢ players, the path to making a UFL roster has been laid out by the likes of Locos quarterback CHASE CLEMENT. The former Rice passer progressed from Las Vegas tryouts in 2010 to lead the Locos to the UFL championship Game, claiming the game ‚¬â„¢s MVP award in the process.

Safety Dennis Keyes, who tried out for the Locos and Mountain Lions and made the team ‚¬â„¢s roster in Sacramento said of the tryouts: ‚¬Å“It hurts you to just sit around and do nothing. The ability to keep your tools sharp and play football is important. If someone was hung up on the decision, I would persuade them to do it. You ‚¬â„¢ve got nothing to lose. ‚¬Â

Omaha Nighthawks head coach JOE MOGLIA will be the first to test the talent pool when he hosts tryouts at The Bolles School in Jacksonville, FL, on Saturday, March 19. ‚¬Å“We believe we will find talented players who are capable of earning a roster spot with the Nighthawks, ‚¬Â said Moglia.

The Nighthawks will also hold tryouts at Buddy Echols Field in Coppell, near Dallas, TX, on Saturday, March 26 and in the team ‚¬â„¢s backyard at Bellevue West High School in Bellevue, NE, on Saturday, April 9.

The Sacramento Mountain Lions begin their open tryouts on Saturday, May 7 at San Diego High School ‚¬â„¢s Balboa Stadium then return home for two dates in Sacramento a week later. Foothill High School hosts the tryouts on Saturday, May 14, followed by the city ‚¬â„¢s Natomas High School on Sunday, May 15.

The fourth and final opportunity for players to prove themselves to the Mountain Lions coaching staff will be at San Mateo Community College on Sunday, May 22. Registration opens at www.UFL-Football.com on March 25.

‚¬Å“Our entire coaching staff is excited about the opportunity to have these four tryouts, ‚¬Â said Mountain Lions head coach DENNIS GREEN. ‚¬Å“All the players who came out last year (to tryouts) worked hard and quite a few made it to training camp. ‚¬Â

The Hartford Colonials and Virginia Destroyers will announce tryout dates in the coming weeks.
