United Bowl II is Here
July 28, 2006 - United Indoor Football Association (UIF) News Release
Omaha, NE - The most anticipated game in UIF history is upon us, as the #2 Lexington Horsemen (14-2) will face the undefeated #1 Sioux Falls Storm (16-0) for the first time this season. This game will determine the true champion of the UIF as both teams have dominated opponents all season long. The Horsemen's only two losses this season came from the Rock River Raptors (12-5), who Lexington defeated in the Semi-Finals to make it to the UBII title game. Game time is slated for 7:05 pm CST in Sioux Falls, SD at the Sioux Falls Arena on Saturday, July 29.
UBII will pit two of the best quarterbacks that indoor football has ever seen against each other. League MVP, Terrance Bryant is on a 19 game win streak since last seasons playoffs and has tore apart defenses all season long. First Team All-UIF quarterback, Eddie Eviston has been the anchor of the top offense in the UIF for Lexington and has broken several records in the process, including a new UIF touchdown record by hitting the end zone 59 times in the regular season. Other players to watch on offense are Harry Lewis and Chad Spencer for the Horsemen. These two were ranked number one and two as wide receivers all season long as Lewis broke the UIF record for receiving yards (1,002) and Spencer broke the receiving touchdown record (22). For the Storm, watch out for lightning quick, Marques Smith at running back. Smith was second in the league in rushing this season as he totaled 776 yards this season and 15 touchdowns. The receiving core for the Storm consist of veterans Casey Veenhof, Matt Holmlund and rookie sensation, James Terry.
Defensively, the Storm's number one defense will face the number one offense of Lexington. Leading the Storm is UIF Defensive Player of the Year, Nate Fluit. Fluit broke a UIF record with 16.5 sacks this season and has also totaled 9 blocked kicks in the process. The Storm's leading tackler is Mark Blackburn who finished fourth in the league with 100 tackles. For Lexington, William Mulder set a new UIF standard for interceptions by grabbing 12 picks on the season and brought two of them back for touchdowns. Leading the Horsemen in tackles this season, was veteran safety and 1st team All-UIF member, Champ Kelly. Kelly has totaled 79 tackles and three interceptions this season.
This is the first time that the two powerhouses of indoor football have had to face each other this season. Two years ago the Horsemen traveled to Sioux Falls for a National Championship title game and defeated the Storm on their home turf, 59-38. Last season the Storm returned the favor by beating the Horsemen at Rupp Arena in the Semi-finals, 62-58, and then advanced to the United Bowl and defeated the Bandits, 40-38. All-time the two teams are 2-2. This is the second time in three years that the Horsemen have been in a title game and the third time in a row that the Storm have battled for the trophy.
