PAPILLION, Neb. - Union Omaha announced today the signing of midfielder Luis Gil for the 2022 season, pending league and federation approval. Gil comes to Union Omaha after spending seven years in MLS and has 2 caps for the United States senior national team.
The California native started his career with Real Salt Lake, scoring 11 goals and helping the team to an MLS Cup runner-up finish in 2013. He then moved on to Querétaro F.C. in Liga MX, the top tier of the Mexican football system, where he won the Copa MX tournament in 2016. He also has one U.S. Open Cup title with Houston Dynamo in 2018. Receiving his first international call-up in 2008 for the U-17 United States national team, Gil has played for the United States at multiple levels, scoring goals in CONCACAF and World Cup matches.
"Luis adds great quality and experience to our team," Union Omaha head coach Jay Mims said. "He has played at the highest level in our country including at every level with the USMNT. Adding an experienced, quality player like Luis will have such a great impact on our team on and off the field for the second half of the season. We are excited to welcome Luis to the club and I know the players are eager to have another hard-working, humble person in the locker room."
