Undefeated Rugby ATL Hosts New York for Its 2nd Home Game of Season
February 19, 2020 - Major League Rugby (MLR)
Rugby ATL News Release
ATLANTA, GA - Rugby ATL welcomes Rugby United New York (RUNY) to Rugby ATL Stadium at Lupo Family Field in Marietta on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 3pm. Rugby ATL has started its inaugural season undefeated in its first two games. This will be the second home game for the Major League Rugby (MLR) franchise.
Rugby ATL offers a fantastic game-day experience that has fans buzzing about the fast-paced, hard-hitting action of the sport. Pre-game festivities begin at noon with a fan festival tailgate. At halftime, the team will honor the Atlanta Rugby Football Club, one of the first rugby clubs in Atlanta which started in 1967.
The team will be launching 'Rugby ATL's Biggest Fan' social media contest prior to this weekend's game. At halftime, the selected fan will need to sprint past two Rugby ATL players to make it to the end goal, where a replica Rugby ATL away jersey will be awaiting them.
Rugby ATL hit the ground running this season. This past week, the team took down a determined NOLA Gold team to earn its second straight win with a 22-10 final score. Rugby ATL currently sits in 2nd place in the Eastern Conference and 3rd place in the MLR standings. However, RUNY's experienced squad is expected to present a challenge to the home team.
"What an opportunity to play against a team loaded with international stars and coaches. There will certainly be a number of aha moments for us as we continue to grow in our experience in this league," said Rugby ATL Head Coach Scott Lawrence.
Of MLR's chosen First XV players from Week 1, Rugby ATL's hard-hitting Johan Momsen and Matt Heaton inserted into the attack. Momsen had 12 tackles, four lineout takes in the aerial game and 21 breakdown involvements. Heaton had 17 tackles, one was key in stopping Utah from forcing a draw in the final minutes of the match. Kurt Coleman currently leads the team in scoring with 17 points and 3rd in the league with 5 penalty goals. Harley Wheeler will be a spotlight player to keep an eye on this MLR season. His pace and agility allow him to move through tight quarters in physical play.
The team's broadcast partners are CBS Sports Network, ESPN+, WATL local channel. Season Tickets are still available, offering the best seating and additional benefits.
