Unbeaten Galaxy Visit Admirals
April 22, 2003 - National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release
ALL games in a 10-week regular season are vital but the Week Four action could take on added importance for some NFL Europe League teams and serve as a turning point in their season.
For the undefeated Frankfurt Galaxy (3-0) it will be a case of keeping early-season momentum going when they visit the Amsterdam Admirals (1-2) on Saturday. The Admirals, on the other hand, will be aiming to halt a two-game slide after back-to-back defeats.
A pair of 2-1 teams keen to stay hot on the heels of the Galaxy meet in Spain on Saturday as the F.C. Barcelona Dragons play host to the Rhein Fire. After losing their season openers, both teams have bounced back with two wins and the winner of this meeting will have an early edge in the race to World Bowl XI in Glasgow.
Sunday's action sees the defending champion Berlin Thunder (0-3) entertain the Scottish Claymores (1-2) at Olympic Stadium.
Berlin will be out for their first win of the year, while Scotland aims to halt a two-game losing streak.
While many neutrals might have the impressive-looking Galaxy pencilled in as early-season World Bowl favourites, head coach DOUG GRABER is determined to keep his team focused in the coming weeks.
He says: "We are 3-0 but we have to keep playing. Our record means nothing right now. We have a lot of bumps and bruises and have a very difficult road trip coming up against the Admirals.
"I told my team in the locker room after the Berlin game that our record is no big deal. From the time we all leave training camp, it is the team that improves most during the course of the season who has the best chance to win the World Bowl."
After seeing his Admirals lose two games in a row to the Dragons, Amsterdam head coach BART ANDRUS will want his team to upset the form book at the Amsterdam ArenA, where the Admirals have lost four of their last five home games.
He says: "We have improved in some areas since Week 1 and regressed in others. We have the ability to move the ball but need to be more consistent."
After dropping their season opener to the Admirals, the Rhein Fire have come good on the back of typical Rhein Fire strengths â running the football and playing solid defense.
Head coach PETE KUHARCHEK says: "It was really important for us to win against Scotland as we prepare to head down to Barcelona for another big game."
Dragons head coach JACK BICKNELL is especially pleased with the way his team bounced back from a heartbreaking opening day loss in Frankfurt to inflict a pair of defeats on the Admirals.
The veteran coach says: "We have a good team that plays consistently hard. I like what I have seen so far. I think our team will keep improving as the year goes on."
Sunday's meeting between the Thunder and Claymores is a rematch of the Week 1 encounter that produced a league record 93 points.
Since scoring a league-best 62 points in that opening day victory, the Claymores have notched just 30 in their last two games â both losses to German opponents Frankfurt and Rhein.
Claymores head coach GENE DAHLQUIST says: "When you look at our offense it's more a case of our lack of execution rather than other teams figuring us out. Inconsistency has really hurt us on offense."
The Thunder are off to their second straight 0-3 start. This time last year they went on a World Bowl charge, winning six of their last seven regular season games and then the championship for a second year in a row.
Head coach PETER VAAS says: "If it's been done before it can be done again. We have shown flashes of being a good football team and I think we are talented, but we are going to struggle if we are not consistent. We have to make plays when they are there."

Tough games to call in Week 4
PREDICTING the outcome of games in the NFL Europe League has always been a perilous affair and that should prove to be the case once again in Week 4.
All three matchups on the slate for this coming weekend have produced numerous close encounters since the NFL Europe League returned as an all-European affair in 1995.
The Frankfurt Galaxy and Amsterdam Admirals have seen seven of their last nine meetings decided by one score or less (8 points).
Last year's games were decided by an average of 4.5 points per contest with the Galaxy emerging victorious on both occasions.
Galaxy head coach DOUG GRABER says: "I expect close games each and every week in this league. Our game against Berlin was not that close this week but our other two wins could have gone either way.
"We have a tough trip to face the Admirals this coming week and that is the hardest place to play in this league. Our games are usually close and I expect a dog fight in Amsterdam."
Admirals coach BART ANDRUS adds: "This is a very balanced league and that equates to lots of close games."
The Rhein Fire and F.C. Barcelona Dragons have played in 16 regular season games since 1995 and half of those contests have been decided by one score or less. Eight of the 16 games have also been won by the road team, making this a tough one for the experts to predict.
Fire head coach PETE KUHARCHEK says: "Our game against the Dragons is the biggest of our season to date. We will have to play well and correct some things from this week to win."
Dragons head coach JACK BICKNELL sums up the competitive nature of NFL Europe when he says: "We should have won in Frankfurt in Week 1 and lost in Amsterdam in Week 2, but it was the other way around â that's what happens in a league with so many close and exciting games."
The Scottish Claymores will be hoping to enjoy a successful trip to the Berlin Thunder in Week 4 as they will feel reasonably confident after defeating the German team 62-31 in a Week 1 game that broke or tied 16 NFLEL records.
But nothing is ever that simple in NFL Europe and the Claymores can ill afford to take the Thunder for granted this weekend. Prior to Scotland's large victory in Week 1, the previous five games between the two teams were decided by an average of 5.6 points per contest.
NEWS AND NOTES
Thunder still positive but glad to see the back of April
THE two-time World Bowl champion Berlin Thunder have one game remaining in the month of April (vs. Scottish Claymores) and they must be counting the days until May appears on their locker room calendar.
Following last week's 41-21 loss to the Frankfurt Galaxy, the Thunder have now lost eight straight games in the month of April and have gone 0-3 to open the season for a second year in a row.
A year after ranking as the best 0-3 team in league history with a points differential of 4.0 per loss, the Thunder are now second-worst in NFLEL history among 0-3 clubs, having lost their threee games this season by an average of 20.67 points per outing.
Despite seeing his team fall to a third straight defeat, Berlin Thunder head coach PETER VAAS says: "Anything is possible in football and of course it is still possible for us to win the World Bowl.
"This time last year we were 0-3 and no one gave us a chance going into the Amsterdam ArenA to play the Admirals, who were one of the toughest teams in the league at home at that time. That team rose to the occasion and won and that is what we have to do now.
"We have not played that well yet but I still believe this is a talented team. There are differences between this year's team and the one from last year, sure, but we can still win the World Bowl. And if you ask me why is that possible? Because it's been done before."
To get their season off and running, the Thunder will need to do something they have not done since they faced the Frankfurt Galaxy on April 28, 2001 â win in the month of April.
Since entering the league in 1999, the Thunder have played 13 games in April and posted a 2-11 record.
By contrast, the Thunder have become strong finishers as evidenced by their World Bowl successes in 2001 and 2002. In those two championship seasons, the Thunder went 6-1 in regular season games played in June and 2-0 in World Bowls.
Addressing his team's April struggles, Vaas says: "Like anything else in football, we have to focus on what we are going to do in the weeks ahead, not on what has happened in the past. We can't be concerned about what has gone on before. We have to get ready to play Scotland at home this week." History suggests World Bowl team on display in Spain
WEEK 4's meeting between the Rhein Fire and the F.C. Barcelona Dragons could feature one of this year's World Bowl teams if the NFL Europe League history books are anything to go by.
The reason? Either the Rhein Fire or F.C. Barcelona Dragons have appeared in every World Bowl since 1997.
Here is a breakdown of the past six World Bowls featuring one or both of those teams:
World Bowl '97 Barcelona 38-24 Rhein
World Bowl '98 Rhein 34-10 Frankfurt
World Bowl '99 Frankfurt 38-24 Barcelona
World Bowl 2000 Rhein 13-10 Scotland
World Bowl IX Berlin 24-17 Barcelona
World Bowl X Rhein 20-26 Berlin
In total, the Fire and Dragons have combined to reach eight World Bowls, winning three of them. The Dragons also played in the inaugural World Bowl in 1991, losing 21-0 to the London Monarchs.
Record books re-written following big nights in Europe
THE Frankfurt Galaxy and F.C. Barcelona Dragons wide receiver SEAN MOREY etched their mark in the NFLEL record books in Week 3.
Morey caught a record-tying 3 touchdown passes during Barcelona's 35-17 defeat of the Amsterdam Admirals, scoring on receptions of 25, 6 and 11 yards.
In Frankfurt, the Galaxy opened the game with 35 first quarter points en route to a 41-21 win over the Berlin Thunder. The 35 points set a league record for the most scored by one team in any quarter.
Galaxy head coach DOUG GRABER said: "I wish I could explain what happened in the first quarter and how we scored 35 points. If I could, I would write a book and make a lot of money.
"I thought our fans were really a factor in the first quarter â that place was rocking. There's no question Berlin lost their poise a little bit because of that."
Thunder head coach PETER VAAS said: "You can't give a good team like Frankfurt 35 points and expect to survive. It was a long day at the office." RB JONAS LEWIS scored 3 touchdowns in the opening period, while QB JAMES BROWN and LB IDRIS PRICE also found the end zone.
Land of the free... agent
EVEN though more than 200 NFL players have been allocated to the NFL Europe League in 2003, key free agents are still finding ways to make an impact on the season.
In Amsterdam, wide receiver MATTHEW HATCHETTE is putting his five years of NFL experience with the Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets to good use as he leads the Admirals with 14 receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown through the opening three weekends.
F.C. Barcelona Dragons free agent cornerback ANTUAN SIMMONS has made a solid start to life in Spain and ranks second on the team with 13 tackles and scored on a 43-yard kickoff return vs. Amsterdam Admirals in a Week 3 victory.
Berlin has received free agent help on defense where fifth round draft pick BYRON THWEATT has been a regular starter at linebacker, ranking fourth on the team with 14 tackles and 1 pass defense. Frankfurt has two key free agents serving as their driving force on offense in running back JONAS LEWIS and quarterback JAMES BROWN.
Lewis, who played in 11 NFL games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2000-01, leads the Galaxy in rushing with 291 yards and 5 touchdowns. Brown has thrown for 401 yards and 1 touchdown while guiding the Galaxy to a 3-0 record.
Galaxy head coach DOUG GRABER says: "I did a college game in which Jonas was playing when I was working in TV and I've always liked him â he is just a good football player."
Lewis adds: "I showed some special teams talent in my two years with the 49ers but now my main focus is running the ball, showing people around the league I can be an every down back and winning the World Bowl with the Galaxy."
Rhein Fire has free agent CHRIS GREISEN at quarterback putting his three years with the Arizona Cardinals to good use, while JAMEL SMITH is a key defensive leader at linebacker, leading the team with 17 tackles and 1 pass defense.
The Claymores have a pair of key free agents on defense in defensive end RADELL LOCKHART, who leads the team with 3 sacks, and linebacker DARNELL ROBINSON, who leads the defense with 19 tackles and 1 sack after being selected in the 19th round of the 2003 NFLEL free agent draft. NFLEL FACT: Look familiar?
Ever had that feeling of deja vu? Maybe it comes from looking at the NFLEL standings after three weeks. Not only are Frankfurt on top at 3-0 again and Berlin bringing up the rear with an 0-3 mark, but had the Admirals managed to keep Barcelona out of the end zone in the final two minutes of their Week 2 game in Amsterdam and win that match, the current standings would read exactly as they did at this time last year.
NFLEL FACT: Somebody stop me
After sitting on the bench for the opening nine games of his NFL Europe League career, quarterback JAMES BROWN is currently 4-0 as a starter. Brown guided the Scottish Claymores to a Week 10 victory over the F.C. Barcelona Dragons in 2002 and has already led the Frankfurt Galaxy to victories over the Dragons, Claymores and Berlin Thunder this season.
NFLEL FACT: Galaxy stars on top
Want an explanation for the Frankfurt Galaxy's great start to the 2003 NFL Europe League season? Might be worth taking a glance at the league leaders after three weeks of the season. Running back JONAS LEWIS leads the league with 5 rushing touchdowns, while RALF KLEINMANN is the top kicker with 19 points. Wide receiver ROBERT BAKER ranks first with 233 receiving yards and defensive end JOEY EVANS is out in front with 5.0 sacks. In the defensive backfield, RASHIDI BARNES, CALVIN SPEARS and JEREMY UNERTL are tied for the league lead with 2 interceptions each.
