Galaxy trio scoop Player of the Week nods
April 22, 2003 - National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release
THREE members of the league-leading Frankfurt Galaxy have won Player of the Week honours after their team's record-breaking defeat of the Berlin Thunder on Saturday.
Running back JONAS LEWIS, free safety CALVIN SPEARS and linebacker IDRIS PRICE played key roles in Frankfurt's 41-21 defeat of the defending World Bowl champions, while Amsterdam Admirals Mexican wide receiver CARLOS ROSADO completed the prize-winning quartet from Week 3.
Lewis, who played 11 games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2000-2001, rushed for 137 yards and 3 touchdowns on 24 carries. He scored on runs of 1, 7 and 5 yards as the Galaxy registered a record 35 points in the first quarter at the Waldstadion.
Lewis is one of just two players to have scored in every NFLEL game this season, the other being F.C. Barcelona Dragons running back Dameon Hunter. He leads the Galaxy with 291 rushing yards (second in NFLEL) and leads the league with 5 rushing touchdowns.
Spears made a huge impact on the game's opening play when he recovered a Frankfurt onside kick attempt to set up the Galaxy's first touchdown of the night. The free agent defensive back went on to record a team-high 6 tackles, 1 pass defense, 1 forced fumble and 1 interception to earn Defensive Player of the Week honours.
His first quarter interception of Thunder quarterback Henry Burris was returned 28 yards to Berlin's 24-yard line and set up Frankfurt's second touchdown of the game.
Price, allocated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, gave the Galaxy a 35-0 lead in the opening period when he returned a fumbled kickoff return 26 yards for a touchdown. He also added 1 special teams tackle to win the Special Teams Player of the Week prize.
Rosado caught 4 passes for 71 yards during the Admirals' 35-17 loss to the F.C. Barcelona Dragons in Spain, with a longest gain of 26 yards. The Mexican wideout is in his first season with the Admirals after spending his first five years in the league with the Dragons.
Through the first three games of the 2003 season, Rosado leads the Admirals with a 16.4 yards-per-catch average and has reeled in 7 receptions for 115 yards.
