ULB remains tight, only Laredo falling behind

The standings as the United League Baseball finishes out its third series of play remain fairly tight, with the fifth place Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (5-7) three games behind the league leaders, the Amarillo Dillas and the San Angelo Colts (each at 8-4).

The Laredo Broncos (2-10) are the only club really trailing in the standings.

All ball clubs were off Tuesday, only one of two off days during the season. On Wednesday, it is Edinburg at Rio Grande Valley, Amarillo at Laredo and Coastal Bend at San Angelo.

In between are the Coastal Bend Thunder (7-5) and the Edinburg Roadrunners (6-6).

One of the hottest players to date is WhiteWing Jonathan Poterson, who broke the league record when he hit his fourth consecutive home run in four at bats on Saturday(June 20). He added another four-bagger on Sunday, giving him seven for the young season.

Leading hitter is San Angelo's Bryan Frichter, who is hitting .500. He is followed by Stanteil Smith of Amarillo, at . 419.Rio Grande Valley's Augustin Septimo is third, with a .391, and Trent Lockwood, Amarillo, at .366.

Others include Angel Reyes, Edinburg, .359; Nick Mahin, San Angelo, .357; Alberto Cruz, Rio Grande Valley, .357;Bryan Smith, Edinburg, .341; Mario Mendez, Laredo, .333; O.J. Garza, Laredo, .333; and Robert Matlock, Edinburg, .333.

Coastal Bend's Manuel Mejia leads in RBI's, with 18; Poterson, Nick Mahan of San Angelo, Carlos Hereaud of Edinburg, and Jason Landreth, San Angelo all have 12.

Dustin Smith, Coastal Bend, son of Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, leads in stolen bases with 10 and Frichter has nine. Frichter also has scored 14 runs and Dustin Smith has scored 13. San Angelo pitcher Brian Henschel is the league's first three game winner.
