UIF Week Nine Preview

Omaha, NE - It's re-match weekend with all five games being re-matches of prior clashes earlier this year. Four of the five games start at 7:05 p.m. Central; the late game begins in Loveland, CO, at 7:05 p.m. Mountain.

LEXINGTON (4-3) vs. EVANSVILLE (2-5)

At Evansville, IN

The Evansville BlueCats look to rebound after a 41-28 Mother's Day defeat at the hands of the Omaha Beef. Leading the BlueCats so far this season has been running back Ray Kirkley who has rushed for 288 yards and nine touchdowns. Defensively, Evansville has recorded nine sacks and intercepted nine passes (four by Choo Choo Davis). Leading the way for the Lexington Horsemen are quarterback Kewan Dewberry and linebacker Eric Norris. Dewberry has thrown for 1,177 yards and 25 touchdowns while Norris leads the team with 34 tackles (4.5 tackles for loss (TFL) and is tied for 1st on the team with two interceptions.

OHIO VALLEY (2-5) vs. BLOOMINGTON (3-3)

At Bloomington, IL

The Bloomington Extreme returns to action after a bye week. In their last game, they defeated the RiverCity Rage 49-23 at Family Arena. Quarterback Dusty Burk and the Extreme defense have led the team this season. Despite playing in only four games, Burk has thrown for 566 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for 101 yards and five scores. Defensively, Eric Johnson leads the team with 3.5 sacks and three players (Dion Brown, Terrill Mayberry and James Walton) have each intercepted a pass. The Ohio Valley Greyhounds are coming off a win over the Rage as well, scoring a 55-37 victory at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, WV last Saturday. Leading the Greyhounds this season has been quarterback Freddy Ray and linebacker Devin Conwell. Ray, from nearby Martins Ferry, OH, has completed 47.7 percent of his passes for 1,060 yards and has had a part in 21 total touchdowns (rushing for six and passing for 15). Conwell, who played collegiately at Ashland College, leads the team with 38 tackles (four TFL), is tied-1st on the team with a sack, and has an interception.

RIVERCITY (5-3) vs. ROCK RIVER (4-3)

At Rockford, IL

The Rock River Raptors return home to MetroCentre boasting two wins in a row, both over conference opponents. The Raptors defeated Lexington 42-37 last Saturday at Rupp Arena. Quarterback Ben Sankey and linebacker Maurice Simpkins have led the Raptors to the brink of first place in the Eastern Conference. Sankey has completed 151 of 220 passes thrown for a league-leading 1,681 yards and 27 touchdowns. Simpkins leads the team in tackles with 53.5 and also interceptions with three. The Rage come to Rockford, having lost three-in-a-row including last weekend to Ohio Valley 55-37. Leading the charge for the Rage on the year have been quarterback Anthony Fisher and defensive lineman Terrell Washington. Fisher has tossed for 1,013 yards and 21 touchdowns while Washington has 42.5 tackles (10.5 TFL), 4.5 sacks and even blocked three kicks.

OMAHA (4-4) vs. SIOUX FALLS (7-0)

At Sioux Falls, SD

The Sioux Falls Storm are looking for their record 28th win-in-a-row as they host the Omaha Beef at the Sioux Falls Arena. The Storm tied the mark of the 2002-04 Ohio Valley Greyhounds with a 56-31 win over the Sioux City Bandits last Saturday. Through seven games, the Storm have been lead by quarterback Terrance Bryant and defensive lineman Nate Fluit. Bryant has completed 61 percent of his passes for 1,239 yards and 24 touchdowns-he also has rushed for 122 yards and three scores. Fluit has made 28.5 tackles (12.5 TFL), recorded 9.5 sacks and blocked six kicks. The Beef got back to .500 last Sunday by defeating the Evansville BlueCats 41-28. Quarterback James McNear and defensive lineman Tito Hannah have lead the Beef so far this season. McNear has had a hand in 18 total touchdowns (rushing for three and passing for 15) while Hannah has tallied 25.5 tackles (11.5 TFL) and 7.5 sacks.

SIOUX CITY (2-5) vs. COLORADO (4-4)

At Loveland, CO

The Colorado Ice return home after falling last Friday to the Billings Outlaws 42-33 at MetraPark. In their expansion season, Colorado has been lead by running back Eugene Reed and defensive back Travis Garcia. Reed, the UIF-leading rusher with 411 yards, has also caught nine passes for 72 yards and returned 11 kicks for 202 yards. Garcia has recorded 42 tackles as well as leading the team and the UIF with five interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. The Sioux City Bandits suffered a tough loss last Saturday to the Sioux Falls Storm by a 56-31 margin. In 2007, the Bandits have been lead by former Morningside College standouts Craig Fobbe and Spetlar Tonga. In the previous four games, quarterback Fobbe has rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown while also throwing for 445 yards and eight touchdowns. He leads the club in both rushing and passing yardage. Tonga, a linebacker, has tallied a team-high 35 tackles (8.5 TFL) as well as two sacks and grabbing two interceptions.
