UIF Week 11 Re-Cap

June 5, 2006 - United Indoor Football Association (UIF) News Release

Omaha, NE - United Indoor Football had some of their craziest games happen in Week 12. Taking victories over the weekend were the Sioux Falls Storm, Rock River Raptors, Ohio Valley Greyhounds, Sioux City Bandits and the Bloomington Extreme. With so many games coming down to the wire and every team playing their hearts out, you can smell the playoffs approaching.

SIOUX FALLS STORM 40, at OMAHA BEEF 38 - The Storm managed to hold off a late fourth quarter surge by Omaha reserve quarterback, Andy Majors, too remain at a perfect 10-0 on the season and on top of the UIF. The Beef fell to 4-6 and need to pick up the pace in the last five weeks in order to make a playoff spot. Sioux Falls took control of the first half by heading into the locker room with a 31-19 lead. The third quarter, the Beef defense shut-down the Storm offense and held them scoreless as the Beef picked up an extra five points from a Ted Retzlaff field goal and a Richard "Big Sexxy" Johnson safety on Terrance Bryant. Sioux Falls managed to gain the two-points back with their own safety in the beginning of the fourth and also answered back with an 8-yard TD pass from Bryant to James Terry for one of his two touchdowns on the night. With only six minutes left in the game and down by 16, Head Coach Robert Fuller, sat Fran Johnson and gave Majors a shot. In his first drive of the night, Majors took the snap and rushed for a 25-yard touchdown as well as the two-point conversion. With minutes left and down by 8, the Beef defense held the Storm one last time and Majors came to the rescue once again. He rushed for another 6-yards and brought them to within two with under 30-seconds left. The Storm D-line put a halt to the Beef two-point attempt and the Storm came out on top, 40-38. For Sioux Falls, Terrance Bryant threw for 105-yards and five TD passes from 10 of 21 attempts. Casey Veenhof had three receptions for 52-yards and two scores. For Omaha, Majors and Jamar Day combined for 85-yards rushing and 4 touchdowns. Defensively, Storm LB, Justin Landis led all players with twelve total tackles (ten solo and four assisted) and also included two pass break-ups. Next week the Storm host the Peoria Rough Riders and the Beef welcome in Rock River.

In OHIO VALLEY GREYHOUNDS 52, FT. WAYNE FREEDOM 29 - The Greyhounds (5-5) keep their playoff hopes alive as they knocked off the Freedom (3-7) for the first time this season. All-star running back, Rocky Harvey, came back into the line-up for the first time since his injury back in week 5 but proved not to be a big factor in the game. Harvey rushed ten times for 35-yards and one touchdown in his return. The Hounds pulled away with the victory in the second half as they out-scored the Freedom 21-6 in the final two quarters. Leading the high powered offense for Ohio Valley was Week 10 Offensive Player of the Week, Matt Kohn as he threw for 127-yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions from 15 of 24 passing. Kohn shows no favoritism when throwing the ball, as he had six players with at least one reception and each of his TD throws going at a different receiver. Darrell Dowery led the air assault with three catches for 38-yards and one TD. For the Freedom, Johnell Wyatte led the offense with six catches for 98-yards and two scores, while Bryan White threw for 136-yards and two touchdowns from 12 of 22 passing, along with 2 interceptions. Leading the defense was the Week 10 Defensive Player of the Week, Brock Dodrill (OVG) who had five solos, nine assisted tackles and one fumble recovery. Next week the Hounds head to Bloomington and the Freedom travel to Evansville.

SIOUX CITY BANDITS 42, at PEORIA ROUGH RIDERS 33 - The Rough Riders (0-10) almost received their first victory on the season after a second half comeback attempt on Saturday night against the Bandits (5-5). Peoria went into the half tied with the Bandits at 13. The third quarter was mostly Sioux City, as they outscored the Riders, 19-7. Bandits QB, Hosea Harris threw for one and rushed for another in the third. Peoria outscored the Bandits, 13-10 in the last quarter of the night and came to within two points after a Bob Swanson 2-yard run to put the score at 35-33. The Bandits answered right back with a Warre Holloway touchdown and ended the hopes of the Rough Riders taking the win. The Bandits took the game with a score of 42-33. Holloway rushed for 63 yards from 10 carries and one TD and Leandre Moore had 54-yards on the ground from nine carries and two scores. Johnny Ostermeyer had all four of Harris's completions for 79-yards and one TD. Leading the Peoria offense was Phil Taylor Jr., who had four receptions for 48-yards and one touchdown. Leading both teams in defense was Peoria's, Dominic Payne, who had seven solo and five assisted tackles, along with one pass break-up and one interception returned for five yards. Next weekend the Bandits head to Lexington and Peoria travels to Sioux Falls.

BLOOMINGTON EXTREME 51, at EVANSVILLE BLUECATS 48 - In one of the craziest ends to a game in UIF history, the Bloomington Extreme (5-5) held off a BlueCat (3-7) second half surge to win 51-48 at Roberts Stadium. The Extreme dominated the first half and went to the locker room with a 27-13 lead. Head Coach, John Hart, must have gave his BlueCats a terrific pep talk as they came out and scored 28-points in the third quarter and took the lead going into the fourth, 41-37. In the final quarter of play, both teams did absolutely everything they could to win and scored in almost every way possible. The start of the quarter came with two Bloomington scores as James Fuller caught a 23-yard pass from Kenton Carr for the TD and not much after, Peter Christofilakos hit a 45-yard field goal to put the Extreme up, 47-41. Ton-Ton Luzayadio then hit a 37-yard field goal for another three points for the BlueCats to bring them to within 3. Now is where the crazy part of the game happened. The BlueCats managed to make back-to-back safeties on the Extreme (worth one point each and the ball) and moved into the lead with a 48-47 lead with 1:25 left in the final quarter. The Extreme then kicked off after the final safety only to find themselves able to stop the BlueCats in the end zone to receive a rough (worth one point.) The game was now tied with 1:25 left in the fourth quarter at 48 all. The Extreme held position to the final 17 seconds and Christofilakos then hit a 40-yard field goal for three points and the victory. The Extreme went on to defeat the BlueCats, 51-48. Week 12 will have the Extreme hosting the Greyhounds and Evansville hosting the Freedom.

ROCK RIVER RAPTORS 55, at LEXINGTON HORSEMEN 46 - For the second time in three weeks, the Raptors (7-3) have knocked off the Lexington Horsemen (8-2) to give them their second loss of the season. With Sioux Falls currently at 10-0, odds are these two teams will be fighting for the second seed in the playoffs to receive a first round bye. The Raptors never trailed in the entire contest and the closest the Horsemen came was six points in the end of the third quarter with a score of 38-32. Ben Sankey showed why he is one of the best QB's in the UIF after he threw for an amazing 231-yards from 24 of 38 passing and six touchdowns. Sankey did throw one interception in the contest. Tyrece Butler and Luke McArdle combined for 145-yards receiving and four touchdowns and Jeremiah Thompson chipped in with 47-yards receiving and another two scores. Eddie Eviston struggled throughout the night after being so consistent all season long. Eviston threw for 150-yards from 12 of 23 passing and four TD's. He also mistakenly threw three interceptions as well. Leading the Horsemen offensively was wide receiver, Chad Spencer, who had six catches for 89-yards and three touchdowns. Next week the Raptors head to Omaha dn the Horsemen host the Sioux City Bandits.
