UHL accepts rule changes

August 3, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) News Release

LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO--- The United Hockey League (UHL) announced Wednesday that the UHL Board of Governors has accepted two rule changes to be implemented for the 2005-06 season. The center ice red line will be ignored for the purpose of the "two line pass". Players in their own defensive zone will be allowed to legally make a pass to the opposite attacking blue line.

In addition, "touch" icing will be instituted. When a team "ices" the puck, the opposing team must make contact with the puck for an icing infraction to be ruled. The UHL had utilized "no-touch" icing during the 2004-05 season.

The UHL Board of Governors previously adopted new National Hockey League (NHL) standards for goaltender equipment during the 2005 Annual Meeting in June.

"We took into consideration the rule changes made by the NHL then accepted the changes we felt were best for our league," stated Richard Brosal, UHL President/CEO. "We experimented with the ‘elimination' of the red line during our preseason games in 2004 and feel this rule change will open up the ice and create more offensive opportunities."

"In regards to other rule changes made by the NHL, the UHL Board of Governors felt that due to the time frame and cost structure, it would not be in our best interest to accept the changes at this time."
