JIM SPEROS, the owner of the new United Football League team in the Hampton Roads area, and team GM DOUG WILLIAMS will present JOHN RIGGINS as he addresses the Potomac Officers Club luncheon on Thursday, July 22, at 11:30 AM at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Tyson's Corner.
UFL Team Virginia is the Presenting Sponsor of the event, Jim Speros will serve as Master of Ceremonies, and Super Bowl XXII MVP Doug Williams will introduce Super Bowl XVII MVP John Riggins, the keynote speaker.
Speros was recently awarded the rights to own the franchise in Virginia. The UFL provides high-quality professional football during a traditional fall season while embracing innovation and fan interaction. The UFL is owned by a consortium of private investors, including William Hambrecht of WR Hambrecht + Co, the founder of the league, AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, and Mark Cuban, Chairman of HDNet. Paul Pelosi, William Mayer and other investors are also part of the UFL ownership team.
In 2009 UFL games were nationally broadcast on VERSUS and HDNet, as well as webcast on UFL-Football.com. During the upcoming season games will again be telecast, and webcast, nationally.
"This is going to be Virginia's team," said Speros. "The players will live there and we are going to create local jobs. We are going to showcase this team around the state and make sure that the fans and community have a chance to taste the product. Hampton Roads is the perfect home for the UFL."
Speros explained that the team, which will be named based on fan opinion to be surveyed at a later date, aims to host tryouts, training camps and events at several venues within the state.
Speros formerly owned the Canadian Football League Grey Cup Champion Baltimore Stallions. He was a coach for the Super Bowl Champion Washington Redskins and Buffalo Bills, and technology executive and entrepreneur. He currently owns and operates the Velocity Five Sports Restaurant chain in Northern Virginia.
Doug Williams was an All-American at Grambling University, a first round NFL Draft choice of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the MVP of Super Bowl XXII as the record-setting quarterback of the Washington Redskins. He later was the Head Coach at Grambling University and a senior executive with Tampa Bay before joining the UFL.
John Riggins, an All-American at the University of Kansas and top draft choice of the New York Jets, was the MVP of Super Bowl XVII as the Redskins beat the Dolphins behind Riggins' record 166 yards rushing. He is currently a TV and radio host, commentator and actor.
