UFL Player Tryouts Headed to Cleveland, Oh. and Middletown, Ct.
Published on June 1, 2011 under United Football League (UFL 1) News Release
JACKSONVILLE, FL - The dream of becoming a professional football player could become a reality for athletes in Connecticut and Cleveland this weekend when two United Football League teams hold open player tryouts.
The Hartford Colonials and Virginia Destroyers both invite free agents to impress on Saturday, June 4. Colonials head coach JERRY GLANVILLE will oversee tryouts at Rosek-Skubel Stadium in the Miller-Fillback Sports Complex in Middletown, CT, while Destroyers head coach MARTY SCHOTTENHEIMER heads to George Finnie Stadium at Baldwin Wallace College, near Cleveland. The events are open to the public with free admission.
"The fans will see players from the Steelers, the Raiders, and other players who have been in the NFL with Super Bowl teams," said Glanville, who signed three players from the Colonials' first two open tryouts in Houston on May 14 and the Atlanta area May 21.
Colonials fans can also get a first look at quarterbacks COLT BRENNAN and JERROD JOHNSON as both will be on hand to watch the tryouts. Brennan holds the NCAA single-season record with 58 touchdown passes as a junior at Hawaii in 2006. Johnson, the No. 1 overall pick by the Colonials in the 2011 UFL Draft, is the all-time leading passer in Texas A&M history.
Coach Schottenheimer is no stranger to Cleveland, having served as the Browns defensive coordinator from 1980-1984 and then as head coach from 1984-1988. With that experience, both he and Player Personnel Director BRET MUNSEY acknowledge the hotbed of football talent that comes from the Cleveland area.
"It is always a great opportunity [for players] not only to get in front of Coach Schottenheimer, but at the end of the day, have an opportunity to sign a professional contract," said Munsey. "It is all about being recognized; the players we will be looking at must be in the top echelon of their group. We've got a number of positions we are concerned about still. We're always trying to get better at every position.
"There are a lot of great football players from that area and we hope we can get people from the West Virginia, Michigan, and Ohio area to come to Cleveland. With the coach's ties, and the talent level of the players in the area, the staff is very excited at the prospects for upcoming tryout."
Players participating in tryouts must fill out an information form, workout injury waiver and present it at the time of registration. Forms and more information about tryouts can be found at [2]www.ufl-football.com. Athletes will be timed in the 40-yard dash and will participate in a series of individual and team drills.
Registration for the Colonials tryout opens at 8am and the event is schedule to run until 2pm. In Cleveland registration begins at 7am with the tryout ending at 1pm.
