Virginia Destroyers News Release
Virginia Beach, VA, Thursday, March 31 - BRIAN MELEKIAN has been named Senior Vice President of the Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League.
Melekian has more than 15 years of experience running sports teams and stadiums and is in his second season with the UFL having coordinated all aspects of league operations in 2010, a responsibility he will continue to oversee in 2011.
The Los Angeles, CA, native will relocate to the Hampton Roads region and will be responsible for all team business and operations, supported by existing Destroyers staff.
"I am grateful for this opportunity," said Melekian. "There is no greater feeling than the challenge of building something from the ground up and making it your own. Having spent considerable time in the Hampton Roads region to date, I know firsthand the excitement and passion for professional football. We are going to offer the local fans a team and a game day experience that they can be proud of."
Melekian was the Director of Operations for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer from 1998 to 2002 before being tasked with opening the Home Depot Center in 2003 and managing all operations of the 300-acre soccer and multi-purpose facility in Carson, CA. During his tenure the stadium hosted two Major League Soccer franchises, Women's World Cup 2003, multiple X Games, USTA events and hundreds of other events.
"Brian comes to Virginia with the perfect blend of experience in how the UFL operates and a working knowledge of the team and the local market, so is the ideal person to take on this role," said UFL Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE. "The planning and execution of our games and events was first class last season under Brian's leadership that he now brings to the Destroyers organization."
In 2003, Melekian was honored by the International Association of Assembly Managers for hosting the most creative and operationally challenging event by hosting a professional Olympic qualifying sand volleyball tournament, X Games and Major League Soccer event all in one week. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California.
The Destroyers will inherit the roster of the Florida Tuskers who were defeated in the 2009 and 2010 UFL Championship Game and head coach Marty Schottenheimer will lead his expansion team Destroyers against the reigning champion Las Vegas Locos, Hartford Colonials, Omaha Nighthawks, and Sacramento Mountain Lions when the third UFL season kicks off in August.
