UFL 2011 Season Kickoff Countdown - 2 Days
Published on September 13, 2011 under United Football League (UFL 1) News Release
JACKSONVILLE, FL - Tuesday, September 13, 2011 - In two days, a no-doubt-rowdy crowd at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska, will enjoy the opening game of the 2011 United Football League season between the home-standing Nighthawks and the Virginia Destroyers.
When that happens, the UFL will become the first alternative outdoor football league not affiliated with the National Football League to play a third season since the United States Football League (1983-85).
And, when that first foot strikes football on Thursday night that will be the start of what promises to be another exciting season of UFL play.
THE "U" IN UFL STANDS FOR "ULTRA-COMPETITIVE"
Of the 21 UFL games played during the 2010 campaign, 11 were decided by a touchdown or less - including five in a row in Weeks 1-3. Seven of the 21 games were decided by a field goal or less.
Here is how the UFL compared to the NFL and the Canadian Football League during the 2010 regular- and postseasons:
CATEGORY UFL NFL CFL
Number of games 21 267 77
Decided by 3 points or less/percentage 7 (33.3) 66 (24.7) 18 (23.4)
Decided by 7 points or less/percentage 11 (52.4) 129 (48.3) 36 (46.8)
In addition, of the 21 UFL games last season, teams were separated by seven points or less going into the fourth quarter in 10 of them (47.6 percent), and teams were within seven points of each other at some point during the fourth quarter in 15 of them (71.4 percent).
