Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Shreveport-Bossier Captains announced Sunday that they have invited two players from their open tryouts to 2011 spring training with the club, which is now underway.

Righty pitcher Danial McHenry, who also won a spring training roster spot out of 2010's open tryouts, along with outfielder Lance West, both will get the chance to make the team out of spring training.

Captains manager Vince Moore was impressed with the talent of the 35 hopefuls who came to the tryouts on Saturday, and said that the two invitees have earned their opportunity.

"Danial and Lance really showed me something yesterday," Moore said. "They have the chance to show me something in the next 10 days and I'm looking for their best."

McHenry, 23, pitched collegiately at nearby Louisiana-Monroe, and then spent two years playing in the Continental League.

West is a local product, born in Shreveport and now living in Frierson, La. The 23-year-old was drafted in the 42nd round of the MLB Draft by Texas in 2006, and in the 39th round in 2008 by Baltimore, before spending two seasons in the Orioles' minor league system.

The Captains' spring training workouts are open to the public. Call the Fair Grounds Field office for that day's schedule.

The 2010 American Association Champion Shreveport-Bossier Captains begin the defense of their title on Wednesday, May 11, against the Lincoln Saltdogs, at 10:05 a.m. For information on 2011 tickets, promotions, advertising, and other opportunities with the Captains, check out the Web site as well, or call the Fair Grounds Field office at (318) 636-5555.
