Amsterdam Mohawks News Release
For the second time since moving to Amsterdam, the Mohawks have a former player that has made it to the majors. University of Kentucky pitcher Logan Darnell called Amsterdam home in the summer of 2008 and is now a member of the Minnesota Twins.
Cord Phelps (Stanford-2006) was the only Mohawk player to make it to the bigs since the Mohawks moved to Amsterdam in 2003. Darnell, a sixth round pick of Minnesota in 2010 was called up to the Twins to add an arm to the bullpen after they played 21 innings on Thursday.
In 2008, Darnell was the Mohawks ace as he posted a 3-0 record with a 1.82 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 34.1 innings. The Mohawks went 26-14 in the regular season and were defeated in the NYCBL playoffs by Glens Falls in the Eastern Division Finals. The highlight of Logan's season came at the All-Star Game in Watertown, where he dazzeled the scouts in attendance with his fastball toping out at 95-mph.
Logan visited the Mohawks for a couple days during the All-Star break while pitching for Rochester.
This season Darnell made four starts with AAA Rochester pitching to a 1.69 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 21.1 innings, holding opposing hitters to a .195 batting average.
"He was starting down there and was throwing the ball well," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We need innings. We have to have a guy up here that's stretched out. He can throw 100 pitches if we need it."
"It's definitely exciting," Darnell said. "It's something you always look foward to as a baseball player. When you're young you look foward to it, and when you're in the Minors you're always pushing to get there."
Darnell was in uniform Friday night and ready to pitch against the Orioles. He was up in the bullpen, but Ricky Nolasco went the distanceas as the Twins were defeated 3-0.
The Mohawks will kick off the 2014 season on June 5, against the Newark Pilots. Amsterdam is coming off back-to-back PGCBL League Champions and look to continue their high level of play along with another season full of fun that the entire family can enjoy.
