Florida Tuskers News Release
ORLANDO, FL - THURSDAY, AUGUST 19, 2010-- On Thursday, the Florida Tuskers added kicker Carlos Martinez (5'8, 175 lbs, Buena Vista) to their 70-man training camp roster.
Martinez joins the Tuskers fresh off a brilliant season in the Arena Football League with the Orlando Predators where he made 12 of 23 (52%) field goal attempts and 103 of 114 (90.3%) extra point attempts during the regular season.
"I am very excited about signing with the Tuskers. It is an ultimate goal of mine to make it into the NFL and this opportunity with the UFL and Tuskers will give me that chance," Martinez said. "I would like to thank head coach Jay Gruden and [special teams assistant] Jim Lanford for this opportunity. The Orlando football fans are the best around."
A six-year veteran of the AFL, Martinez has kicked for the Dallas Desperados and Georgia Force before signing with the Predators for the 2010 season. Martinez has made 44 of 92 (47.8%) field goals in his AFL career while connecting on an outstanding 520 of 578 (90%) extra points. He has scored 654 career points.
The goal posts in the arena league are 15-feet high by nine-feet wide; 50% higher and 50% narrower than the outdoor game, making Martinez's numbers that much more impressive. The longest made field goal of his AFL career came in Orlando's Amway Arena back in 2006 with the Desperados when he connected from 57-yards out.
In college at Buena Vista University (Iowa), Martinez was a three-time Division III All-American selection. His 48 field goals made was a school record and is the second most in Division III history.
"Carlos has been consistent and strong during his AFL career," Gruden said. "He has earned the spot and I am pulling for him to do well. He has a powerful leg and we are lucky to have him."
