Joe Theismann Visits Tuskers Training Camp
August 19, 2010 - United Football League (UFL 1)
Florida Tuskers News Release
ORLANDO, FL - THURSDAY, AUGUST 19, 2010--Former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann stopped by to check out the Florida Tuskers today, as the Orlanodo-based UFL franchise practiced in shells for a second straight day.
The quarterback was sporting a teal colored polo in support of the Tuskers.
In his visit to Thunder Field, Theismann was able to address the team with his knowledge and advice of how to approach the upcoming UFL season. After speaking with the team and doing a live television interview on a local news station, Theismann addressed a group of reporters and spoke highly of the league.
"I think playing in the UFL is a tremendous opportunity for these guys," Theismann said. "There's such a limited number of guys that make rosters in the National Football League and then what happens to the guys are good enough to play, but don't really get a chance? Well, the UFL provides that venue for those guys to continue to work on their skills."
Theismann was also very complimentary of the high level coaching talent the Tuskers possess.
"The players get as good of coaching as they would get in the NFL," he said. "Guys like [head coach] Jay Gruden, [special teams coach] Al Roberts, [defensive coordinator] Chuck Bresnahan, and [defensive backs coach] Bill Bradley the list goes on and on of guys who have coached at a high level."
The Orlando market is a football rich area in the middle of three NFL cities (Jacksonville, Miami, and Tampa Bay), but has not had an outdoor professional football team to call its own since the days of the defunct Orlando Rage, an XFL team who played only one season.
Theismann also noted the stability of the UFL and its marketability to the Orlando area.
"This is a wonderful venue for the fans to come out and support a professional football team," he said. "I think it's a positive for parents in the area to be able to bring their kids and introduce them to professional football."
Now working as a football analyst for NFL Network, Theismann showed a great knowledge for the UFL and its players who have aspirations to rejoin the NFL.
"Brooks Bollinger has been in the NFL, as has Dominic Rhodes, Daunte Culpepper, and Jeff Garcia," said Theismann. "These guys play in the UFL because that NFL window closed for them. Some of these guys had opportunities to go to the NFL but said 'not right now I want to stay here' and that is all you need to know about what's happening with the UFL."
Tuskers Thursday Camp Notes: Brooks Bollinger continues to improve the timing with his receivers...Bollinger completed three deep passes on Thursday, one each to wide receivers Bennie Brazell, Jayson Foster, and Calvin Robinson...The defense remains tough to analyze until the team gets in full pads for tackling. However, the coverage from the defensive backfield has been solid and there has been pressure on both Bollinger and rookie Matt Grothe who are athletic quarterbacks...The special teams worked a lot on kickoff and punt returns after Theismann addressed the team near the end of practice...UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue was in attendance at camp Thursday...Head Coach Jay Gruden indicated the team would probably engage in its first day of live scrimmaging on Saturday.
