Turner Returns to Icehawks
June 18, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Port Huron Icehawks News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks of the International Hockey League announced that defenseman Ian Turner has signed a contract and will return in the 2009-10 season. Per team policy, details of the deal were not released.
Turner (6-1, 190 lbs) had the most prolific season of his career with the Icehawks in 2008-09, turning in career bests in goals (11), assists (26) and points (37). He finished the regular season with a +8 rating and tied for the team lead in points among defensemen. An essential part of the Icehawks power play unit, he netted two goals and 13 assists on the power play.
"We are very happy to have Ian return. He plays in every critical situation for us," Head Coach and General Manager Stan Drulia said. "His ability to lead the rush and the way he competes every night makes him a very valuable piece of the puzzle."
He continued, "His leadership off the ice and commitment to our organization is appreciated. Last year he played through numerous injuries that would have kept many players out of the lineup. After two off-season surgeries, he will be ready to go come October."
The upcoming season will be Turner's sixth as a professional and first as a veteran in the IHL. The 27-year old native of Belleville, Ontario turned pro in the 2002-03 season with the Richmond Renegades in the East Coast Hockey League and went on to play four total seasons in the ECHL and one year at St. Thomas University (CIS) before coming to Port Huron.
His ECHL career included two seasons with the Reading Royals (2003-2005), where he led the team to back-to-back playoff appearances, including a division championship. After a year of collegiate hockey, he then returned to the ECHL with the Phoenix Roadrunners (2007-08) and led the team in points among defensemen with seven goals and 25 assists in 70 games.
