October 3, 2022 - United Soccer League One (USL1)
FC Tucson News Release
A year later, Tucson Police Department gets to take home the Hero Cup presented by CORE Construction.
Rafael Tovar scored the game-winner and Maruricio Mantilla put the game away in the final 10 minutes as Tucson Police knocked off Tucson Fire Department Saturday at Kino Grandstand to claim the annual trophy.
Tucson Police fell to DM United on penalty kicks last year in the inaugural edition of the cup.
Tucson Fire took an early lead on a goal from Paul Hestand, before Kyle Cornell tied the game for Tucson Police.
At the end of the first half, Tucson Fire earned a penalty kick and Matt Kappes converted to give them the lead at the break.
Midway through the second half, Tucson Police capitalized on a miscue by Tucson Fire's goalie to tie the match. Tovar drilled a long shot in the 74th minute to break the tie.
All proceeds from the match went to Candelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern Arizona, and CORE Construction Vice President Fred Knapp was on hand as the Ball Presenter. He presented a check for $2,655 to Candlelighters after the match.
