Trio of Former USHLers Make up 2023 Hobey Hat Trick

The Hobey Award committee has announced that a trio of former players from the United States Hockey League are the three finalists for the 2023 Hobey Baker Award as the top player in NCAA Division I men's college hockey.

This year's recipient of the Hobey Baker Award will be announced on March 30 with the winner presented the trophy live on NHL Network on Friday, April 7, at the Frozen Four in Tampa.

Logan Cooley, a sophomore forward at the University of Minnesota who hails from Pittsburgh, Pa., has registered 20 goals and 37 assists for 57 points in 37 games as the Gophers have advanced to the Frozen Four this year. Drafted in the first round (third overall) by the Arizona Coyotes last summer, Cooley played two seasons in the USHL with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program where he registered 28-36- 64 in 51 games.

Adam Fantilli, a freshman forward with the University of Michigan, led the nation in scoring this year with 64 points on 29 goals and 35 assists in 35 games. Eligible for the NHL Draft this summer where he's projected as one of the top prospects, the Toronto, Ont., native played a pair of seasons in the USHL with the Chicago Steel here he racked up 55-55- 110 in 103 games from 2020-22.

Matthew Knies, a sophomore forward with the University of Minnesota, has tallied 21-20- 41 in 38 games in helping lead the Gophers to the Frozen Four this year. A Phoenix, Ariz., native and a second-round draft pick (57th overall) of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2021, Knies played in the USHL with the Tri-City Storm from 2018-21 where he tallied 31-56- 87 in 90 games played.

Including last year's winner Dryden McKay (Minnesota State), who played with the Madison Capitols and the Green Bay Gamblers, 13 former USHL players have been Hobey Baker Award recipients since the award was inaugurated in 1981.
