CHICAGO - Quad City offensive specialist JEFF HEWITT, Columbus wide receiver/defensive back JAMES DICKERSON and Birmingham defensive specialist JULIUS GRIFFITH have been named Offensive Player, Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 3 of the 2003 season.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hewitt (5-11, 190, Southwest Missouri State), who is in his third season, totaled an af2 season high 353 all-purpose yards against the Tennessee Valley Vipers on Friday night. Playing for the first time at the offensive specialist position, Hewitt caught ten passes for 209 yards and six touchdowns. He also returned seven kickoffs for 120 yards and one missed field goal for 24 yards. His receiving yardage and touchdown total set league highs for 2003, and he is the only player to eclipse the 200-yard receiving mark this season. His 353-yard all-purpose yardage is the sixth best single game total of all-time. Hewitt is also the new af2 scoring leader with 42 points thus far on the season. This is Hewitt's first Offensive Player of the Week award.
IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Dickerson (6-3, 185, Georgia Southern), in his fourth af2 season, provided a solid all-around effort for the Wardogs last week, leading them to a 47-32 win over Rochester and the team's first-ever 2-0 start to the season. Dickerson scored two of the Wardogs' first three touchdowns as they built a 20-0 lead on the Brigade. For the game, he led all Wardogs receivers with four catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, he grabbed one interception, which he took back 45 yards for a score, and he made five stops (4UT-2AT). Dickerson's 18-point performance leaves him 30 back of reaching 500 for his career. This is Dickerson's second Ironman of the Week award, as he won it once during the 2000 season.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Griffith (5-11, 170, Mississippi State), a rookie, helped slow the League's top-rated offense as his Steeldogs went on to a 57-43 win over the Bossier City Battle Wings. Griffith had a game high 7.5 tackles (7UT-1AT), forced and recovered a fumble, which he carried 29 yards to set up a score, and he registered an interception. He also added two passes defended.
