Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (23-19, 65-46) left the base loaded twice and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position as the Daytona Tortugas (24-16, 60-49) pulled the series even with a 3-1 final on Saturday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Domingo German (L, 0-1) shouldered the loss after holding Daytona to one earned run on six hits in five innings of work. The right-hander issued three walks, struck out six and threw 51 of 78 pitches for strikes.
Trey Amburgey and Zack Zehner hit back-to-back singles with one out in the second against LHP Seth Varner, giving the Yankees their first scoring threat. After a groundout by Thairo Estrada, Varner walked Kevin Cornelius. A groundout by Wes Wilson ended the inning.
Tampa collected two more singles in each of the next two innings. Varner extinguished both opportunities, striking out the final two batters in the third and inducing an inning-ending double play in the fourth.
Shed Long broke the scoreless tie in the fifth with a line drive home run over the right field wall, giving Daytona a 1-0 lead.
Varner (W, 5-7) scattered seven hits and a walk in seven shutout innings, striking out six and throwing 60 of 88 pitches for strikes.
The Tortugas added a run in the seventh against RHP Matt Marsh. Blake Trahan got a leadoff base hit and advanced on a bunt single by Long. The duo pulled off a double steal and Angelo Gumbs followed with a sacrifice fly.
Jorge Mateo legged out an infield single to start the bottom of the eighth against RHP Ariel Hernandez. Rashad Crawford and Gleyber Torres both walked on four pitches, loading the bases with no outs. Jeff Hendrix grounded out to first, scoring Mateo. Hernandez struck out Amburgey before hitting Zehner with a pitch, reloading the bases. RHP Jimmy Herget relieved Hernandez and got Estrada pop out.
Daytona got the run back against LHP Caleb Frare in the ninth. Trahan reached on an error by Mateo at second base and Long followed with an RBI triple. Long went 4-for-5 and finished a double shy of the cycle.
Herget retired the side in order in the ninth, earning his league-best 20th save.
Zehner (2-for-3, HBP) reached base three times. Mateo (2-for-5, R, CS) and Amburgey (2-for-4) also had multi-hit games.
