Tucson Toros News Release

Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Toros swept both games of their doubleheader against the Tijuana Cimarrones Saturday, 11-2 in the first game and 3-2 in the second. The first game served as a continuation of Friday night's game which was suspended due to rain.

In that first game, Tucson took the lead back from Tijuana by racking up 3 runs in the bottom half of the 3rd inning to make the score 3-1. The rain took over with the Toros leading 4-2 in the bottom of the 4th inning, suspending the game at 9:09 p.m.

The game was resumed today at 5:37 p.m. as the Toros continued the 4th inning by tacking on 2 more runs, increasing their lead 6-2. They wrapped up the first game with an 11-2 victory. P Albie Lopez earned his 4th win of the season after throwing 5 scoreless innings and RF Darren Blakely turned in the most impressive offensive night with 3 singles in 4 at-bats with an RBI and a run scored.

In the second game, Tucson edged the Cimarrones 3-2. Three Tijuana errors led to 2 runs for the Toros and Tucson starting pitcher John Bannister helped his own cause with an RBI in the 2nd inning to go along with a stellar pitching performance. Bannister earned his 4th win of the season while striking out 5 batters and allowed just 1 earned run in 6 innings of work. Closer Emiliano Fruto shut down Tijuana in the last inning for his 11th save of the season.

1B Cristobal Santana increased his hitting streak to 15 straight with an RBI double to left in the first game and 2 line drive singles to right in the second game. C Luis Apodaca's 6 game hitting streak came to an end in the first game after not recording a hit in 3 at-bats.

The Tucson Toros will head to Bisbee this Sunday where they will play an exhibition game against the Bisbee Copper Kings of the Pacific Southwest Baseball League at historic Warren Ballpark at 4:00 p.m. The Toros will help celebrate the 101stbirthday of Warren Ballpark, which is thought by many to be the oldest continuously used baseball venue in the United States. Live music and other festivities will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will take place until the first pitch. Gates will open at noon.

The Toros will then have three days off before they go on a 14-game road trip against the GBL's three Canadian teams. The team's next homestand will start on Thursday, August 19th where they will kick off another 3-game home series against Tijuana.
