
Toros Qualify to Playoffs for Second Time in Franchise History

EDINBURG, Texas - Rio Grande Valley FC (13-11-8; 47 pts.) have clinched a playoff spot for the second time in franchise history. The Toros will travel to Phoenix to take on Rising FC (20-5-7; 67 pts.) at Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex on Saturday, November 6 at 9:30 p.m. CST.
RGV FC: Last week, the Toros clinched the fourth and final playoff spot of the 2021 Western Conference Mountain Division with a 4-1 win against El Paso Locomotive FC. The last time RGV made the playoffs was back in 2016 also under Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera. The Toros kicked off the game with an early goal in the 7th minute after El Paso conceded a foul in the penalty area. Rodrigo Lopez then converted the penalty kick to the left side of the goal to score the first goal of the matchup 1-0. Before heading into halftime, Kyle Edwards was able to take on the Locomotive backline, forcing the goalkeeper to come out. As Logan Ketterer came out to attempt to block a shot, Edwards slipped it to the bottom right corner to grab a 2-0 lead for the Toros. El Paso managed to put a goal in back of the net in the 52nd minute after Louis Herrera was able to sneak the ball past Tyler Deric, 2-1. In the 59th minute Edwards scored a brace after a left foot strike past Ketterer, 3-1. The last goal by RGV came in the 79th minute after Emilio Ycaza sent a right footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom left corner to cap off the matchup, 4-1. The Toros finished the night with 12 total shots, six on target while Los Locos totaled seven shots, two on target.
PHX: Phoenix clinched the 2021 Western Conference Pacific Division title. In the last regular season matchup Phoenix Rising FC drew 1-1 to Tacoma Defiance. The first goal of the match was for Tacoma Defiance in the 30th minute when Samuel Adeniran scored off a left footed shot to the top right corner of the net. Phoenix responded with the match equalizer in the 70th minute with a right footed goal from Arturo Rodriguez and assists from Jon Bakero. Overall Phoenix had 18 shots, six on target and Tacoma had 13 shots, six on target. Bakero led the night with four shots and three created chances. Andre Rawls finished the game with five saves.
