
Toros Kept Alive with 2-0 Win over New Mexico

EDINBURG, Texas - Rio Grande Valley FC (11-11-8; 41 pts.) defeat New Mexico United (11-10-10; 43 pts.) 2-0 on Saturday night at H-E-B Park.
Toros grabbed the lead in the 47th minute after Christian Sorto sent a ball to Rodrigo Lopez. Lopez put the ball away to earn a 1-0 lead. The second goal of the matchup came in the 58th minute after Sorto sent a headed ball to Kyle Edwards. Edwards then struck the ball to the bottom left corner to keep the Toros alive in their playoff run, 2-0.
The first half remained scoreless between both sides. In the 4th minute, Emilio Ycaza sent a left footed shot from outside the box but missed to the top left corner. Both Edwards and Jonas Fjeldberg had an opportunity each but weren't able to capitalize.
In the 19th minute Christopher Wehan sent a shot but was sent too high. The Toros continued to threaten the New Mexico goal but didn't finish the opportunities.
The second half was dominated by RGV. Tyler Deric was tested in the 46th minute after Wehan sent a left footed shot to the bottom left corner but Deric stopped the attempt. Eight minutes later, Isidro Martinez sent a long ball following a set piece, but Deric blocked deflected the ball.
The Toros struck again in the 67th minute with three different occasions. Baboucarr Njie first took a shot but New Mexico's goalkeeper deflected the ball out giving Ycaza an opportunity to shoot but was blocked. Sorto was able to send a deflected shot but was also blocked from sending it to the back of the net.
RGV FC finished the night with 19 total shots, six on target while New Mexico United totaled four shots with one on target.
Ycaza totaled four shots tonight with two on target and two key passes. Five Toros players took three shots each. Sorto had five key passes and two assists for the night. Defensively, Ycaza also led the squad with two tackles and four interceptions.
