Toronto Lynx News Release
FRIDAY FEBRUARY 10, 2006(Toronto, CANADA) One of Canada's elite men's soccer clubs is scoring points for orphaned and abandoned children in South Africa. The Toronto Lynx Soccer Club and SOS Children's Villages Canada are renewing their partnership to raise awareness and funds for "6 villages for 2006" -- the official charity campaign of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Launched in September 2004, the campaign marks a major commitment on the part of FIFA and soccer associations around the world to raise enough funds to build six new SOS Children's Villages across the world by the final whistle in July 2006.
In 2005, the Canadian Soccer Association stepped up to help raise enough funds for a âCanada House' in the new SOS Children's Village in Rustenburg, South Africa. The building will be a home for orphaned and abandoned children, many who have been left without any immediate family by the HIV/AIDS pandemic which has swept over Sub-Saharan Africa.
"The participation of the Toronto Lynx in this project has been a huge vote of confidence and support for the work we carry out across the world and is deeply appreciated", said Kelsey Lemon, Partnership Coordinator with SOS Children's Villages Canada. "The club's participation over the past year has helped to bring Toronto soccer fans face to face with the harsh realities faced by the world's most vulnerable children, and how there can be hope for the future" she continued
With SOS Lynx Game Days planned for June and July, the Toronto Lynx will make it possible for the organization to be on site at the games to give soccer fans information on the campaign and about how they can become involved.
Based at Centennial Park Stadium in Etobicoke, the Toronto Lynx Soccer Club is part of the United Soccer League's professional division. Nicole Hartrell, the owner and Chief Operating Officer of the Club enthusiastically supports the international campaign saying, "We believe that soccer is the unifying force in the world of sports and this campaign will help children in six countries who are falling through the cracks. The Toronto Lynx have a long tradition of assisting charitable organizations serving the youth in our province, our country and throughout the world."
Established in 1949, SOS Children's Villages one of the largest international child charities. Operating in 134 countries, SOS provides long-term family-based care for more than 54,000 children who have been orphaned, abandoned or whose families are unable to care for them. SOS Children's Villages commits to the children under its care from infancy to young adulthood giving them loving homes and supportive communities in which to grow, and the education, training and life skills to allow them become active, empowered citizens of the future.
