Toronto Lynx News Release
The Toronto Lynx defeated the Virginia Beach Mariners 2 to 1 this evening on a night where the weather suited the name of the visiting team. The rainy evening at Centennial Park Stadium in Toronto, Ontario, Canada did not dampen the spirits of either side involved in this fast-paced event . The win raises the Lynx' record to 7-12-7 (28 points) on the season, while Virginia Beach drops to 8-12-8 (32 points). The match was the fourth of four meetings between the two teams, and was the Lynx' first win against Virginia Beach this season. Virginia Beach won the first two matches of the year between the two clubs 2-0 on April 22nd in Virginia Beach and 3-1 on July 2nd also in Virginia Beach. The two teams also drew 0-0 at Centennial Park Stadium on June 4th.
The first half saw the Lynx come out strong and they were rewarded for their play with a goal in the 10th minute. Kevin Jeffrey was fed a beautiful pass by Gordon Chin that allowed him to go in alone on Virginia Beach keeper Matt Nelson. Jeffrey was able to place the ball past Nelson giving the Lynx the lead 1-0. The remainder of the first half was played fairly evenly as Virginia Beach seemed to be finding their stride as the game progressed. Virginia opened the scoring in the second half in the 60th minute with a solid header from Brian Cvilikas that got past Theo Zagar who was tested on numerous times in the half. Some astute substitutions by Duncan Wilde saw Osni Neto come in to the game in the 65th minute for Gordon Chin. The strategy paid off with Neto scoring off a perfectly placed Aristodemo pass in the 69th minute. Virginia Beach pressed hard in the waning minutes but were unable to beat Zagar thanks to some quick reflexes and some steady defending by the team up front.
The Lynx finish their season at home against the Minnesota Thunder on Sunday September 10th. Sunday September 10th will also play host to the 10th annual Toronto Lynx Player Awards.
Notes: The win extended Toronto's home undefeated streak to 9 games. Gordon Chin and Shawn Faria both returned to the Lynx line up after serving suspensions.
