Texas Tornado News Release
The Texas Tornado overcame a slow start and dominated the second half of the game to sweep the New Mexico Mustangs by a 3-1 score on Saturday night, outshooting New Mexico by a 55-27 margin. The win is an NAHL-high six in a row for Texas, who moved into a tie for 1st place in the NAHL's South Division. Donald Olivieri, Josh Royston and Taylor Herndon scored for Texas in the win.
The Tornado started the game with the majority of the offensive chances, but Mustangs goaltender Bryan Jones stood tall. The Tornado almost struck first as Jackson Leef made a nice deke to get free, but his backhander went off the crossbar. The Mustangs stepped up the pressure the second half of the 1st period thanks in large part to two Tornado power plays which were interrupted by Texas penalties in both instances. The Mustangs would make the Tornado pay for the mistakes as Eli Riddle slapped home a drive from the point on a Mustangs power play to give New Mexico their first lead of the weekend at 1-0. The rest of the period included some great saves from Tornado goaltender Jimmy Kruger to keep the Mustangs lead at one heading into the lockerroom.
The 2nd period saw both teams trade shots, but the Tornado started to show their offensive firepower outshooting the Mustangs in the period by a whopping 30-7 margin. The Tornado would tie the game on the power play as Jack Prince passed the puck to the point to Donald Olivieri who lasered home a one-timer slap shot from the point that Jones never saw go over his right shoulder. Tornado netminder Jimmy Kruger against stood tall in net, stopping two breakaways in the period. That led to the Tornado go-ahead goal with just :16 seconds remaining in the period as Josh Royston got a pass in the high slot from Tyler Mort and beat Jones to the blocker side giving Texas their first lead of the night.
The Tornado put the defensive screws to New Mexico in the 3rd period. Jimmy Kruger was solid in goal stopping all 10 shots in the period. The Tornado put the game out of reach as a nice play by Nate Sliwinski to keep the puck in the offensive zone got the puck to Taylor Herndon who sent a rocket of the shot from the left face-off dot over the glove of Jones, which then stuck into the netting of the goal for the 3-1 lead and eventual win. The Tornado once again dominated the shot chart as the NAHL leaders in shots on goal pumped a total of 55 shots towards Jones.
