Texas Tornado News Release
Behind four points from Ralfs Freibergs and six goals in the 2nd period, the Texas Tornado defeated the Bulls in Amarillo on Saturday night, 8-4.
The Tornado came out firing in the 1st period. After some early saves from goaltender Jimmy Kruger, who was making his 3rd consecutive start, the Tornado got on the board first thanks to some nice cycling by the make-shift line of Mico Solorzano, Sean Heidrick and Michael Zagari. Heidrick stole the puck along the wing, slipped a pass to the high slot and Zagari one-timed it past Nikifor Szczerba for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 Tornado lead. The Tornado made it 2-0 late in the 1st period thanks to a 5 on 3 power play goal off the stick of leading scorer Rock Einersen from a pass from Ralfs Freibergs and Jack Prince.
The 2nd period was perhaps the wildest of the young season with a combined nine goals from both teams. The Tornado made it 3-0 just :17 seconds into the period as Donald Olivieri hammered home a power play slapshot from the point. However, Amarillo fought back with back-to-back 2 on 1 goals within a minute of one another to breathe life into the building and bring the Bulls back to within 3-2. However, the Tornado stepped on the game with the next four goals. Marc Biggs scored his second goal in as many nights to make it 4-2 with a booming slapshot that beat Szczerba clean to the glove side. Rock Einersen would make it 5-2, as slapshot from 40 feet would elude Szczerba again for Einersen's second of the night. That would be the last action that Szczerba would see as he was pulled in favor of Mac Haight. The Tornado however would not treat Haight any differently as they scored two more goals within :20 seconds of one another as Axel Boyer and Josh Ryston found the back of the net to make the score 7-2. After Bulls goal from Kyle Sucher made it 7-3, Taylor Herndon would make it 8-3 with a rebound goal heading into the 2nd intermission.
With the game in hand, the Tornado allowed just one goal in the 3rd period to the Bulls Matt Johnson, but that would be it. The Tornado came away with an 8-4 win and outshot the Bulls 39-23 in the game. Freibergs ended up with a season-high four assists, Axel Boyer finished with three points and Rock Einersen scored two more goals. Goaltender Jimmy Kruger remains undefeated in the Tornado uniform and the Tornado winning streak is now at a season-high four games. With the win the Tornado sit in a log-jam for 2nd place in the South Division with 15 points, now tied with Amarillo and Topeka, and just a point behind Wichita Falls.
