Published on October 15, 2003 under National Women's Football Association (NWFA) News Release

Jay Leno's NBC Tonight Show has decided to find out what all the excitement is about the new sport of women's full contact football. Working with the staff of the National Women's Football Association, the Tonight Show will send intern Ross Mathews to check out the league's regional tryouts.

The regional tryouts will be held in Fairfield, a suburb of Cincinnati on November 8, at the Fairfield Youth Athletic Association. Registration opens at 10:00am with the tryouts starting a 11:00am. Potential players will go through a combine set of drills to see if they are good enough to make the cut for one of the NWFA's new teams in Cincinnati, Columbus, Evansville and Louisville. Mathews from the Tonight show will be put through all of the drills to see if he's got what it takes to survive our tryouts. "We're excited to have Ross and the Tonight Show crew attend this event. I've seen his stories on the Tonight Show and we think they've certainly selected the right guy for the job! It will be a lot of fun to see how his athletic prowess stacks up against the tough women football players," states Debby Lening, the NWFA's VP of Media.

Ken Hall, the Head Coach and owner of the Chattanooga Locomotion will run the tryouts for the Cincinnati and Louisville teams along with interim Louisville Coach, Willy Williams. The Columbus Comets will also host tryouts at the event with the Comet's coaching staff running their team's drills.

Organizers expect a large number of tryout hopefuls and many onlookers to watch this event. "The city of Cincinnati has been extremely helpful coordinating this tryout and we are looking forward to making this a huge event for this town and our league,"states NWFA's Tryout Coordinator, Racheal Burton.

Women interested in trying out for the Cincinnati, Louisville, or Columbus teams are invited to attend. The cost to participate at the tryouts is $35.00. "We're expecting a huge crowd at this event and would like to pre-register as many people as possible so that we can cut down on the registration time," adds Burton. To pre-register, please email Racheal at footballoffice@cs.com or call (615) 860-4084. All participants should dress comfortably, bring something to drink and wear cleats.
