Titans End Weekend with Shootout Victory

December 21, 2015 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL)
Danbury Titans News Release

The Danbury Titans went into their final weekend before the Christmas break with two games. Saturday night the first place Danville Dashers visited the Danbury Ice Arena while Sunday afternoon was the outdoor Border War with the Brewster Bulldogs.

The Titans started off Saturday night well as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Andrew Kolb scored his first professional goal just four minutes in while Ryan Patsch added a goal a little over halfway through the first. Danville started controlling the play late and added a goal to cut the lead to one.

In the second period Danville was able to tie the game at two early. Tyler Gjurich scored his league-leading 20th goal of the season. However, the lead was short lived as tied it just under two minutes later. The game would go into the third tied at three. Unfortunately for Danbury the Dashers came out and scored three goals in the third period to take the win. It was disappointing for Danbury to take the loss despite outshooting Danville 47 to 26 in the game.

The loss gave Danbury even more motivation for Sunday night as they visited Brewster for the outdoor Border War. Despite the cold temperatures the action was hot on the ice as both teams traded scoring chances in the first period but solid goaltending kept the game scoreless.

Brewster struck first about halfway through the second period before Danbury's Kory Helowka responded a short time later to tie the game. It was evident many fans from Danbury made the trip after that goal. The second period ended 1-1.

The rivalry was evident between the two teams as the physicality and emotion picked up in the third period. Brewster tallied five minutes in to take the lead as they pressured Danbury in their own zone before getting the puck behind Mike Pearless. Danbury picked up the pace and was able to get a power play. After some frantic puck movement and a few bounces Bryan Dallaire ripped a slapshot from the point that found its way through a crowd and into the net to tie the game. A few more scoring chances would be traded throughout the period but with no goals.

In true pond hockey fashion, the teams skated three on three for the overtime. Fast paced action and odd man rushes highlighted the overtime as expected. Fortunately for both teams, the goalies were able to make some big saves and keep it scoreless and force a shootout.

During the shootout, Mike Pearless was the big star for Danbury as he stopped five out of the six attempts Brewster brought his way. His performance in the net gave Danbury the opportunity it needed to bring the win home. After Ryan Patsch scored on the first attempt, the Titans' attempts were stopped until Dean Yakura came up in the 6th round of the shootout. Yakura came down on Brewster's goaltender and shot the puck low and was able to make it in. Pearless' final stop put a bow on the gift that was the Border War win.

The Danbury Titans will head out on the road for the next six games. Their next home game will be Saturday, January 9th against the Danville Dashers. For tickets and information about the Titans call 844-DTHOCKEY or visiting our website.
