Aiken Foxhounds News Release
AIKEN, S.C. - On opening night Thursday at Roberto Hernandez Stadium, the 1,785 Aiken Foxhounds fans in attendance were treated to an extra-inning thriller, and Jeff Timmons made sure they went home happy as the right-handed catcher blasted a walk-off solo home run in the 12th inning as the Foxhounds (4-3) downed the visiting Anderson Joes (1-6) 11-10.
After setting the Joes down in the top of the first, Aiken went to work in the bottom of the inning. Evandy DeLeon connected for a leadoff homer and in the process recorded the first hit and scored the first 'Hounds run in their home stadium. Aiken added an unearned run in the inning to lead 2-0.
The Joes erased a 2-1 deficit with five runs in the top of the fourth inning, but the 'Hounds did them one better in their half of the frame, plating six runs to reclaim the lead at 8-6. Aiken got RBI hits from Brian Conradi and Joe Cuttone before Kelly Hunt capped the inning and gave the 'Hounds the lead with a two-out, bases loaded blast that easily cleared the wall in left field.
Foxhounds' starter Jesus Soto worked five innings, allowing six runs, just one earned, on eight hits while walking three and striking out six. He left with the lead, but Anderson battled back off reliever Kevin Holt to tie the game with two runs in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, the 'Hounds regained the lead at 9-8 when Francis Finnerty drove in pinch runner Jeff Landry with a double down the left field line.
Down to their last out in the top of the ninth, the Joes kept the game going when pinch hitter D.J. Dixon blasted a two-run home run to deep right field off of Foxhounds reliever A.J. Montano.
The Foxhounds displayed the same type of resiliency in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and the bases empty, Finnerty doubled to center field. A ground ball to short by Tim Sweeney looked to end the game, but Angelo Tavelli's throw to first sailed into the Joes' dugout, allowing the game-tying run to score.
Cody Reed (1-0) worked out a bases loaded jam in the top of the 12th inning. With one out, a fielder's choice by Kevin Culpepper forced Tavelli at the plate. Reed struck out Quihuis-Bell to end the threat and set the stage for Timmons' dramatics in the bottom of the inning.
Timmons greeted reliever Will Krout (0-1) with a shot that sailed over the foul pole down the left field line.
Hunt finished 2-for-4 with four RBI while Finnerty collected three hits in five at-bats and drove in a run. Sweeney also added a two-hit night for the 'Hounds.
Game two of the three-game set is slated for Friday night at Roberto Herandez Stadium with the first pitch at 7:05 PM.
