Rockford Thunder News Release
LEAGUE CITY, Texas - Texas rookie Serena Settlemier was involved in all the action on Saturday night for the Thunder. The reigning Big XII Player of the Year earned her first win of the season in the circle, as well as hitting a three-run first inning home run.
After retiring the side in order in the top of the first inning, Settlemier stepped to the plate with runners on first and second. She then belted her league leading third blast to give the Thunder all the runs they would need as Texas cruised to a 10-0 win and a series sweep.
Offensively, Texas was led by another rookie player. Again, it was Raquel "Rocky" Spencer, who finished the night 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Thunder would add two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings and three more in the sixth to clinch the victory. In the four game series with the Michigan Ice, Texas outscored them 36-1.
Settlemier would finish the evening 1-for-4 at the plate, but it was her work on the mound that was impressive. She faced just 14 batters over four innings of work, retiring four by strikeout, to improve her personal record to 1-1 this season. The win also improved the Thunder to a league-best 7-1.
In relief of Settlemier was Lake Jackson native Nicole Neuerburg, who pitched three innings in the game, allowing just one hit. She also struck out four in the game and in her nine innings of work this season, she is yet to allow an earned run.
The Thunder will return to action at Big League Dreams on Wednesday, June 21, 2006 when the Arizona Heat visit League City. Game time for the whole weekend is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Big League Dreams (1150 Big League Dreams Pkwy.) in League City.
