LEAGUE CITY, Texas - The Texas Thunder used a three-run fifth inning to coast to a 4-0 win over the Michigan Ice on Thursday night at the Big League Dreams Sports Park in League City.
Rookie Rocky Spencer (Texas A & M) got things started in the fifth with a single to right field and she would come around to score on a single by catcher Denise Dahlberg (Hawaii). The hits were the only two of the inning for the Thunder, but Michigan committed three errors in the field leading to the other Texas runs.
Spencer was the offensive star in the game for the Thunder as she collected three hits in as many at-bats. She also recorded a couple of putouts in right field.
The Thunder scored their only other run in the third inning. Kristen Zaleski (Texas State) doubled to left field, stole third and came in to score on a poor throw from the Ice's catcher, Nikki Conway.
Amanda Freed (UCLA) delivered the second consecutive shutout in the circle for the Thunder. Freed carried a no-hitter into the top of the seventh inning, but she lost it to Charity Butler to lead off the inning. Auriel Jenkins would follow Butler's single of her own, but neither runner would make it past second base in the inning. Butler was eventually cut down trying to steal third to end the game.
On the night, Freed pitched seven innings allowing just two hits while striking out seven. She faced just two more (23) than the minimum to record her first win of 2006.
The Thunder will return to action tomorrow night for game three of the series with the Michigan Ice. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Big League Dreams (1150 Big League Dreams Pkwy.) in League City.
