Minnesota Thunder News Release
ST PAUL, Minn â (Monday, June 21, 2004) â With a win Tuesday night over the Portland Timbers at James Griffin Stadium, the Thunder would launch themselves into the lone spot at first place in the Western Conference.
The Thunder (6-1-3, 21 pts), who is currently tied for first place with the Timbers (7-3-0, 21 pts.), will kickoff on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available by calling 651-917-TEAM or by visiting www.mnthunder.com.
The Timbers started the 2004 season as one of the hottest teams in the league, scoring 22 goals in their first eight contests. However, over the past two games, the high-powered offense has only found the net once on a penalty kick. Timbers forward Alan Gordon leads the league in goals with 10 in his first 10 games.
The Thunder is much more defensive oriented, allowing only three goals past goalkeeper Joe Warren in its first 10 games. Warren's .27 goals-against average is good enough for second overall in the A-league. Thunder forward Melvin Tarley is on a hot streak, scoring four goals and a game winning assist in his last three games.
"Portland is going to be a very tough contest for us," said Thunder head coach Buzz Lagos. "They are very strong up top and there are going to be some great air battles near both goals. We are going to have to play a great match to knock them into second place."
The Thunder will go into Tuesday's match undefeated (6-0) at home this season, scoring 10 goals and allowing only one against.
Ben & Jerry's will be giving away FREE ice cream outside of the stadium to all in attendance.
