Minnesota Thunder News Release
VANCOUVER, B.C. (September 26, 2008)- The Minnesota Thunder kicked off their first playoff match in four years, falling to the #2 seed the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0.
The Thunder will host the second game of the two-game aggregate score series against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday, September 28 at 5:05 p.m. at the National Sports Center.
The Thunder came out confident in tonight's match, going against a tough team at their home stadium. After going undefeated in the past six matches, the Thunder had built up the momentum to take on the top teams in this year's playoffs, and still have a chance to do that on Sunday when they host the Whitecaps at home.
After a great win at home against Montreal to secure their first playoff berth in four years, the Thunder seemed unstoppable. Seven goals in two games showed that Minnesota was a completely different team than they were in June.
In the 27th minute, the Thunder had a defensive breakdown that cost them the game. Whitecap midfield Steve Kindel sent a ball in to the penalty area that was flicked on by John Greenfield. Greenfield's clearance was misdirected past Thunder goalkeeper Nic Platter and the score was 1-0.
In the 40th minute, the Thunder had their best chance of the half. Thunder captain Jeremiah Bass, who had a brilliant goal against Montreal last Saturday, ripped a shot from 40 yards out. Bass' shot was hit out by Vancouver goalkeeper Jay Nolly, where it hit the post and went out of bounds.
The second half didn't bring about as many opportunities for either team, with a combined three shots on goal by both teams. In the 89th minute, the Whitecaps sealed their victory. Scoring for the Whitecaps was Justin Moose, who followed his shot into the back of the net after a ball from Jason Jordan. Moose's first shot was saved by Platter but was rebounded into the back of the net.
In the final seconds of stoppage time, a shot by Freddy Moojen was called offside. After a ball from Melvin Tarley, Moojen took a great shot, but was just steps offside and the goal was called back. The game ended in a 2-0 loss for the Thunder, whose playoff hopes are still alive as they host the Whitecaps on Sunday at the National Sports Center in Blaine.
