Minnesota Thunder News Release

The Thunder lost a hard fight to the Puerto Rico Islanders 2-1 on Saturday May 26. This was the second game of a double header with the Minnesota Lightning, who defeated the Chicago Gaels 2-1 in their season opener only hours earlier.

The Thunder got the first goal right away in the 9th minute. Terry Alvino handed the ball off to Thunder player Aaron Paye, who hit it past goalkeeper Joshua Saunders, putting the Thunder up 1-0 early in the game.

Right before halftime, the Islanders retaliated, scoring in the 45th minute. Alberto Zapata passed to Noah Delgado who finished, making the score even at 1-1.

In the 71st minute, Aaron Paye got past Islanders goalkeeper Saunders, with almost a wide open goal, but then defender Marco Velez saved the ball from crossing the goal line, sparing the Thunder of their second goal.

Puerto Rico pulled ahead in the 87th minute, after Delgado got his second goal of the game. Peter Villegas passed to Delgado who pushed the ball past Thunder keeper Joe Warren. The Islanders held the Thunder scoreless for the rest of the game, securing their second win of the season.

The Thunder's next game is June 2nd at James Griffin Stadium. The Thunder will meet the Charleston Battery at 7:05pm.
