Rockford Thunder News Release
ROCKFORD - The Rockford Thunder has signed free agents Lyndsey Angus and Shanel Scott, team General Manager Aaron M. Moore announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not released.
Angus, 28, will be entering her sixth professional season in 2009. She spent the first five years of her outstanding career with the New England Riptide. In five seasons she has a career average of .274, collecting 185 hits in 674 at-bats. She has collected 95 walks, while only striking out 46 times in her career.
"The experience that Lyndsey brings into our club will be a great asset, especially with our rookie group of young ladies," said Manager Jim Sherwood. "Her ability to anchor 1st base was a hole we needed to fill and I think she will do a great job there, as well as at the plate."
Angus played her college ball at Kentucky where she as three time All-SEC selection for the Wildcats. She currently is in her third season as an assistant coach at Centenary College (La.) where she is responsible for all aspects of coaching, including recruiting, scouting, conditioning, and on-field instruction.
Scott, 24, played her first two seasons with the Riptide. She owns a career batting average of .282 (56-for-198), 37 bases on balls and has scored 54 total runs. She has also stolen 54 bases in two seasons, leading the league both years with 34 (2007) and 24 (2008), respectively.
"I'm ecstatic about joining with the Rockford Thunder," said Scott. "Playing beside the athletes on this team is a privilege I look forward too. I believe the management for the Thunder has done a great job putting the pieces into place for the team to compete for the 2009 Cowles Cup."
"With basically a brand new outfield, Shanel is a huge pick up for us," stated Sherwood. "She brings in league experience, as well as speed in the outfield and on the base paths."
Scott was a first-team All-Big 12 selection as a senior for Oklahoma State before being drafted by the New England Riptide. She currently is an assistant softball coach at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D.
"The addition of these two players will be a huge lift to our team this season," added Moore. "Lyndsey is a top-5 hitter in this league and Shanel can definitely change a game with her speed. Their addition to the roster makes us a serious contender in the NPF."
The signing of Angus and Scott leaves the current Thunder roster at 11 players. They join infielders Lindsay Gardner, Jamie Davison and Chelsea Spencer; outfield Shanna Diller, catcher Megan Willis and pitchers Cat Osterman, Megan Brown, Cassidy Scoggins and Allison Kime. The Thunder also added five players in last week's NPF Senior Draft, but those athletes are not eligible to sign contracts until after they complete their respective college seasons.
