NFLE National Football League Europa

Three Teams Eye Two Title Game Spots As Race To Reach World Bowl Goes Down To Final Weekend

June 12, 2007 - National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release

AND so it comes down to this. After a month toiling under the Florida sun in training camp and nine weeks of regular season play, just 60 minutes of football separates the Frankfurt Galaxy, Hamburg Sea Devils and Cologne Centurions from a berth in Yello Strom World Bowl XV.

For the first time in league history, a regular season enters its 10th week without either of the two World Bowl berths filled.

Hamburg Sea Devils (6-3) are closest to reaching the title game as they prepare to take on the Rhein Fire (4-5) on Saturday evening. The Sea Devils can qualify for the title game even with a loss at Rhein, providing the meeting between the Cologne Centurions (6-3) and Frankfurt Galaxy (6-3) contest produces a winner.

That would leave Hamburg tied with the loser of the Centurions-Galaxy matchup but the Sea Devils hold the tiebreaker advantage over both clubs. So the only way Cologne and Frankfurt can meet again in World Bowl is by producing just the third tie in league history.

The final week of the regular season kicks off on Friday night as the Amsterdam Admirals (3-6) plays host to the Berlin Thunder (2-7).

(Cover story Continued...)

Admirals head coach BART ANDRUS is expecting a strong finish from his team even though they have lost three games in a row to fall out of World Bowl contention.

He says: "We're struggling. At times we play well and at times we don't. But we have a great group of guys and they want to finish this thing on a positive note. We're looking forward to finishing at home with a win and that's what we're focusing on."

Berlin head coach JOHN ALLEN will try to squeeze a good performance out of a Thunder team that has lost five games in a row. He will be glad to be on the road, having gone 0-5 at home this term.

He says: "I'm proud of our guys because they continue to play hard. We're still making mistakes and right now we cannot overcome that. But our guys are playing hard. We'll push forward and try to get a road win at Amsterdam next week."

The Cologne Centurions improved to 6-3 with an impressive victory over the Amsterdam Admirals. It was a result that pleased interim head coach JOHN LYONS, who says: "Our backs were against the wall and we needed to win. What I really liked about our team was that we showed an ability to come back."

Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES knows his team needs a victory in Week 10 to reach World Bowl XV in its own stadium on June 23.

Following last week's loss at Hamburg, he says: "I'm proud of the way we played. We came into a hostile environment and performed well. We missed an opportunity to reach World Bowl but it got away from us. We will play for the next one."

Rhein Fire head coach RICK LANTZ would like to guide his team to a .500 record on the season after leading them to back-to-back victories against Amsterdam and Berlin. They will face the World Bowl-chasing Hamburg Sea Devils in Week 10.

Lantz says: "Last week was a big win for us. I'm proud of our guys because they never gave up. We've been playing hard the entire season and I believe they'll keep fighting right up to the end. Hopefully, we can go and win one more."

Following last week's thrilling victory over Frankfurt, Hamburg Sea Devils head coach VINCE MARTINO is closing in on reaching the World Bowl in his first season in charge of the club.

He says: "Frankfurt has some excellent talent and is a tremendous team so we feel very fortunate that we could battle with them all the way. I'm proud of our kids because they stayed with it when we were really struggling and couldn't really stop them at all. The kids never gave up and they hung in there."

The World Bowl race explained

ALTHOUGH both spots in Yello Strom World Bowl XV remain up for grabs, the picture regarding qualification for the title game has become much clearer.

Three teams - Frankfurt Galaxy, Hamburg Sea Devils and Cologne Centurions - are tied with 6-3 records heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

Hamburg is closest to reaching the title game and here is what it needs in order to qualify for World Bowl XV:

- Victory or tie against Rhein Fire

or

- Loss to Rhein Fire + Frankfurt or Cologne victory

A win would see Hamburg improve to seven victories, meaning the loser of the Frankfurt-Cologne clash could not catch them with six wins.

A loss at Rhein would see Hamburg fall to 6-4. But that record would be enough to see them reach World Bowl, providing Frankfurt and Cologne do not produce a tie.

Hamburg would have the same record as the loser of the Frankfurt-Cologne clash but holds the tiebreaker over both teams. Hamburg is 1-1 against Cologne and 1-1 against Frankfurt, but has a +8 points differential against the Centurions and +2 against the Galaxy.

The winner of the meeting between Frankfurt and Cologne will qualify for World Bowl XV. If the Centurions and Galaxy produce just the third tie in league history, they will meet again in the championship game, providing Hamburg loses to Rhein.

If Hamburg wins and Cologne and Frankfurt ties, the Galaxy will meet the Sea Devils in the title game as they would hold the tiebreaker edge over Cologne.

NFLE FACTS:Hall grabs record

Cologne Centurions defensive end JASON HALL (Carolina Panthers) has tied the league record for consecutive games with at least one sack after registering his 11th quarterback takedown of the season against Amsterdam last week. Hall has now recorded a sack in each of the last seven games, tying the mark set by JOSH TAVES (Barcelona Dragons) during the 1998 season. Hall has tied the club record of 11 sacks (FELIPE CLAYBROOKS, 2004) and stands three short of the single season mark of 14 (DANNY LOCKETT, London Monarchs, 1991 and 1992).

NEWS AND NOTES NFL Europa 2007, Week 10 - Page 3

2007 season proving to be the Year of the Quarterback

DURING the previous 14 NFL Europa seasons, there have been a total of six players who ended the year with a passer rating of 100 points or more.

Proving that this is the year of the quarterback, the 2007 campaign could end next weekend with three men having broken through that 100 rating points barrier.

With a strong finish in Week 10, Frankfurt's J.T. O'SULLIVAN (Chicago Bears), Cologne's ERIK MEYER and Hamburg's CASEY BRAMLET (Washington Redskins) could make league history by becoming the first trio of quarterbacks to end a season with a rating of 100 or more.

The previous best of two quarterbacks with 100+ ratings in the same year was set in 2000 when Scotland's KEVIN DAFT and Rhein's DANNY WUERFFEL posted marks of 107.3 and 107.2. That pair went on to meet in World Bowl, as will two of the three leading quarterbacks this season.

Here is a look at the rating of NFL Europa's three leading quarterbacks heading into Week 10:

Player/Team Yds Tds Rating

J. O'Sullivan (Fra) 1997 15 103.1

E. Meyer (Col) 1384 12 100.6

C. Bramlet (Ham) 1810 15 100.0

Speaking about the impact Bramlet has had on his team in 2007, Sea Devils head coach VINCE MARTINO says: "Last year's group was good but obviously our play at quarterback is that much better with Casey Bramlet at the helm. We're very happy with his play and he does a great job of managing our offense."

Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES adds: "J.T. O'Sullivan has been red hot for us and is a big reason for our success this season.

The other quarterbacks to post ratings of 100 or more in NFL Europa history are DAVID ARCHER (107.0, Sacramento 1992), JIM ARELLANES (104.9, Rhein 1999), ROHAN DAVEY (105.6, Berlin 2004) and GIBRAN HAMDAN (113.4, Amsterdam 2006).

NFLE FACTS:Vince on Course

IF the Hamburg Sea Devils do indeed reach Yello Strom World Bowl XV, VINCE MARTINO would become the first rookie head coach to lead his team to the title game since MIKE JONES (Frankfurt Galaxy) and RICK LANTZ (Berlin Thunder) met in World Bowl XII in 2004. A total of eight coaches have reached the championship game in their first season in NFLE.

Statement regarding Cologne Centurions coach David Duggan

IN the waning moments of the Cologne Centurions' 31-13 victory over the Amsterdam Admirals at RheinEnergieStadion on Saturday, Centurions head coach DAVID DUGGAN became light-headed and needed medical attention on the sidelines.

Duggan initially underwent tests of his blood pressure and pulse and passed those preliminary tests. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was held overnight, as a precaution.

In light of the possible seriousness of the situation, Duggan will not coach for the remainder of the 2007 season in order to concentrate on his health.

Cologne defensive coordinator JOHN LYONS will be elevated to the position of interim head coach in Duggan's absence. Lyons is in his third season with the Centurions after serving as defensive backs coach in 2005 and defensive coordinator in 2006.

Lyons served as head coach at Dartmouth College from 1992 to 2004, racking up 60 career wins (second-most in school history) and won the Ivy League championship in 1992 and 1996, finishing second in 1993 and 1997.

From 1995-97, his team went unbeaten in 22 games and won a school record 15 in a row. Dartmouth went 10-0 in 1996 and Lyons was named New England Sports Writers Coach of the Year and Division I-AA Coach of the Year by the Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association.

At this time, NFL Europa and the Cologne Centurions ask that all parties respect Duggan and his family's right to privacy regarding the situation. All questions should be directed to NFL Europa or Cologne Centurions public relations staff.

Home teams fighting back

HOME teams have had the better of recent times in NFL Europa after struggling through the opening weeks of the 2007 season.

Those playing at home opened the year by winning just six games in the first half of the campaign (15 games), while road teams picked up nine victories.

In the last four weeks (12 games), home teams have picked up seven wins, bringing the overall record for clubs playing in front of their own fans to 13-14 this season.

This weekend's meeting between Frankfurt and Cologne will see one of the clubs register a milestone. Frankfurt can post a perfect record on home soil in 2007, while the Centurions go into the contest with a perfect 4-0 mark and will look to become the first team to win all its road games since the 1991 London Monarchs.

Battle to win league rushing title becomes two-horse race

WITH some strong performances in recent weeks, Berlin Thunder running back CHRIS BARCLAY (Cleveland Browns) has made the battle to win the NFL Europa rushing title a two-horse race as he fights for the coveted crown with Cologne Centurions rusher DERRICK ROSS (Kansas City Chiefs).

Ross leads NFL Europa with 693 rushing yards but Barclay is just 25 yards back with 668 as the 2007 season rolls into its final weekend.

Here is a look at how each of the backs has performed in recent weeks and during the season:

Player/Team Last 3 Wks Season

Derrick Ross (Col) 165 yds, 1 TD 693 yds, 4 TD

Chris Barclay (Ber) 356 yds, 1 TD 668 yds, 2 TD

Both backs have been extremely productive for their respective teams this season.

Barclay, who has averaged 8.7 yards on 41 attempts over the past three games, leads NFL Europa with 1,534 combined yards (668 rushing, 146 receiving, 19 punt returns, 701 kickoff returns). He also leads the league in total yards from scrimmage with 814 (668 rushing, 146 receiving).

Ross leads the league in rushing yards and ranks second in yards from scrimmage with 795 (693 rushing, 102 receiving).

Here is a look at NFL Europa's previous rushing champions:

Year Player/Team Rush Yds

1991 Eric Wilkerson (NY/NJ) 717

1992 Ivory Lee Brown (SA) 767

1995 Siran Stacy (Sco) 785

1996 Siran Stacy (Sco) 780

1997 Siran Stacy (Sco) 785

1998 Derrick Clark (Rhe) 739

1999 Lawrence Phillips (Bar) 1021

2000 Aaron Stecker (Sco) 774

2001 Mike Green (Bar) 1057

2002 Herbert Goodman (Sco) 877

2003 Ken Simonton (Sco) 871

2004 Eric McCoo (Ber) 669

2005 Joe Smith (Rhe) 1026

2006 Roger Robinson (Fra) 1087

Having faced both Ross and Barclay this season, Rhein Fire head coach RICK LANTZ is perfectly placed to discuss both running backs.

He says: "Chris Barclay and Derrick Ross are the best two running backs in the league and they have been the most productive. They're different types of back but they are both fine players and we have noticed them. I hope they can make it in the NFL because it's good for our league when people like that can move on."

Record crowd on hand to see Hamburg defeat Frankfurt

A CLUB record 30,528 saw one of the most exciting finishes in recent NFL Europa history as the hometown Hamburg Sea Devils recorded a 36-31 victory over the Frankfurt Galaxy in Week 9.

The attendance smashed the previous record of 21,204 fans who saw the Sea Devils beat Frankfurt in Week 10 of the 2005 campaign on June 4, 2005.

And those who packed into AOL Arena last Saturday were treated to an action-packed finish as the Sea Devils scored a game-winning touchdown with 48 seconds remaining as CASEY BRAMLET (Washington Redskins) fired a 50-yard pass to wide receiver MARCUS MAXWELL (San Francisco 49ers).

When asked how many games he has coached in that were as exciting as that one, Sea Devils head coach VINCE MARTINO, a former assistant at Boston College, replied: "It's probably the second one. The Miracle in Miami with Doug Flutie's Hail Mary touchdown throw and this one. Both games came down to a desperation-type throw and the outcome rested on one play."

Big crowds have not been unusual in NFL Europa this season and with three games remaining, the 2007 campaign is on course to register the highest average attendance per game in league history.

Here is a look at the top seasons in NFL Europa history in terms of average attendance, including the current 2007 campaign:

Season Avg Attendance

2007 (thru 9 wks) 19,657

2005 18,965

2001 18,573

2000 18,102

NFLE FACTS: Final Comeback

When the Berlin Thunder overcame a 21-point deficit to record a momentous road win against the Cologne Centurions in Week 4, they probably had no idea it would be their last victory for some time. Since that win on May 5, the Thunder have dropped five games in a row. Berlin goes into a Week 10 meeting with Amsterdam knowing they need a victory to avoid ending 2007 with six losses in a row. That would be the second-most consecutive losses to end a season in league history, matching the achievements of the 1992 Montreal Machine. The most consecutive losses to end a season was 10 by the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks, who went 0-10 in 1991.
