Sacramento Republic FC News Release
The boys in Old Glory Red beat Real Monarchs 2-0 on Saturday for the club's final tune-up test before the start of the 2021 USL Championship regular season.
There were plenty of positives to reflect on following the friendly win, but Duke Lacroix's stellar performance, Cam Iwasa bagging a brace and Darek Formella making an immediate impact take the cake in this week's edition of Three Takeaways.
Lacroix Shines Against Monarchs
Signed during the offseason, Duke Lacroix joins a defensive unit with plenty of speed, skills and depth.
Following Saturday's friendly, he was able to show fans that he's able make positive contributions on both ends of the pitch.
Against Monarchs, Duke set up his sides' first goal and minutes later, nearly nabbed another himself. In the 16th minute, Duke picked out an open Iwasa sprinting through the box and because of the defender's well-placed ball, all Iwasa had to do was steer his shot into the back of the net to lift Sacramento to a 1-0 advantage.
Just shy of 20 minutes later, Duke almost doubled the Indomitable Club's lead when Lacroix rifled a shot on target that forced the visiting goalkeeper into a diving stop.
Multigoal Game for Cam
Cameron Iwasa is the all-time leading scorer for the boys in Old Glory Red and his performance on Saturday was another showing of why he's been as lethal in the league for as long as he has.
The Sacramento-native scored twice against Real Monarchs, both of which were tap-ins and Iwasa showcased his composure in front of net by slamming both strikes by the visiting goalkeeper.
The first of which was in the 16th minute when defender Duke Lacroix delivered an on-target ball to the striker who nudged his effort by the 'keeper and into the open net.
His second was in the closing minutes of the match when Dariusz Formella spotted Iwasa open in the box and after the Polish playmaker rifled a pass into space, Cam simply tapped home the goal that doubled SRFC's advantage.
Formella A Second Half Spark
When Dariusz Formella entered the match, it took all of eight minutes for the Polish playmaker to make a positive impact.
In the 89th minute, Darek delivered a ball to Iwasa in the box who scored with ease from close-range. The goal doubled the Indomitable Club's lead and sealed the 2-0 win over Real Monarchs.
Darek was also recently recognized as a top forward in the league to keep an eye on this coming campaign.
Formella and the boys in Old Glory Red will now turn their attention to the first match of the 2021 USL Championship regular season when the squad travels to LA Galaxy II on Friday, April 30.
