Three Takeaways from #LAvSAC
May 3, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release
Republic FC stormed into Carson and returned to Sacramento with all three points following a 1-0 win in the 2021 USL Championship regular season opener.
Mark Briggs' men downed the hosts after midfielder Tucker Bone delivered the punishing strike late in the second half to secure the victory.
There were plenty of positives to reflect on, but these three are the cream of the crop from the road victory over Los Dos on Friday night.
Gomez Posts Clean Sheet in Debut
Talk about a positive first impression for goalkeeper Tomas Gomez.
The veteran shot-stopper manned the net for the boys in Old Glory Red for the first time since joining the Indomitable Club this offseason and the two-time USL Golden Glove winner shined in his debut.
Gomez came up big on a number of occasions and his four saves helped secure all three points for Mark Briggs' men on Friday night.
Midfield Unit a Formidable Force
The Republic FC midfield unit was the unsung hero in the win over Los Dos.
Making his debut was midfielder Fatai Alashe who's three tackles were tied for the most on the squad against LAG II. Alashe added an interception while Jaime Villarreal sacrificed himself with the lone block on the entire team on the night.
Pete Pennanen made his debut for the boys in Old Glory Red and finished the contest with a 93.5% successful passing percentage, including 88.2% in LA's defensive half of the pitch.
Bone Bags Game-winner
Talk about a dream debut.
It took all of two minutes for Tucker Bone to score the first goal of his Republic FC career and secure the win for the boys in Old Glory Red on Friday.
Tucker was signed during the offseason from Reno 1868 FC and immediately made an impact when he entered the match against Los Dos late in the second half for Cameron Iwasa. Bone was assisted by Gomez but it was a ball from Dariusz Formella in space to the fullback that sprang the offensive push.
