Bellingham Bells News Release

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Bells are excited to host three players from Arizona State University this summer. Sun Devils joining the Bells for 2020 include right-handed pitcher Bryce Barnett, left-handed pitcher Danny Marshall and second baseman/catcher Nate Baez.

The Arizona State baseball team is poised for an impressive season this spring. Sources such as Perfect Game, D1 Baseball and Baseball America, all rank the Sun Devils in the top 10 nationally in preseason polls.

Barnett, a freshman from Lockport, Ill., graduated from Providence Catholic High School. He ended his senior season with a 2.47 ERA and 68 strikeouts, which helped his team advance to the 2019 Illinois Baseball State Tournament.

"Bryce is an athletic right-handed pitcher who possesses a loose arm action along with the ability to hide the ball well from hitters producing a high rate of swing and miss," said Bells Head Coach Adam Geaslen. "We are extremely excited to have Bryce joining the Bells this summer and we look forward to him playing a significant role on our pitching staff."

Danny Marshall, another freshman, graduated from Queen Creek High School in Queen Creek Ariz., where he played both football and baseball.

Marshall ended his senior year with a batting average of .339 and a 3.29 ERA, ranking him the No. 8 southpaw in Arizona, according to Prep Baseball Report.

"As a left-handed pitcher, Danny displays an outstanding command for the strike zone with all of his pitches," said Geaslen. "He has the ability to change arm angles on his breaking ball, making him especially difficult on left-handed hitters. Danny is a former dual sport athlete who brings a tremendous amount of competitiveness to the mound. He will be a fantastic addition to the Bells."

Freshman Nate Baez will also play a large role for the Bells this summer, both behind the plate and in the field. The Bells expect Baez to split time as a catcher and second baseman. Baez played three varsity seasons at Ironwood High School and finished with a .414 average and a .700 slugging percentage his senior year.

"Nate is a highly skilled right-handed hitter who displays the ability to hit for both power and average," said Geaslen. "He is an extremely gifted defender with outstanding baseball instincts. We look for Nate to have a significant impact on our lineup both offensively and defensively this summer."

Baez had a stellar defensive outing his senior year with a 1.000 fielding percentage and no errors out of 88 total chances. Perfect Game lists Baez as the No. 2 prep shortstop out of the state of Arizona.

Once finished with their first collegiate season at ASU, all three will play an important role in the Bells' success this summer.

The Bells home opener is June 2 at Joe Martin Field.
