MATCH PREVIEW: Donovan knew the start of SD Loyal's second season would be a tough one with the handful of road matches. But that is why he opted to have a training camp that was full of preseason games against different kinds of opponents. The preseason work appears to be on its way to paying off as SD Loyal showed improvement against RGV FC last week. Donovan made the adjustments that worked for most of the match until a late goal sealed a win for The Toros. He wants those adjustments to carryover to this match and continue to improve against Tacoma, the second divisional match in this early season as the team looks for its first win of 2021.
Tacoma had its season opener this past weekend. It played to a 1-1 draw against LA Galaxy II in a dramatic match. Tacoma salvaged a point equalizing in stoppage time with an Abdoulalye Cissoko score via a penalty kick. LA Galaxy II held a lead since the 78th minute.
Tacoma is led by new head coach Wade Webber. It is coming off a 2020 season in which it came shy of the post season. Finding a higher level of consistency under Webber, who replaces the departed Chris Little, could be the key. There is still some veteran experience to build around but perhaps its main focus will be to build around youngsters. Among those are Puerto Rico international Alec Diaz, who had eight goals and five assists for the club in 34 appearances.
Both teams have met once before. SD Loyal beat Tacoma Defiance 2-1 in March last year with a pair of goals by Francis Atuahene to earn the first win in club history. It was the final match before a pause in play due to the COVID-19 pandemic
